Micro-R OS is an open source, freely distributed and feature-rich desktop-oriented operating system derived from the award-winning and highly acclaimed Ubuntu distribution and designed especially for French-speaking users.
It’s distributed as 32-bit/64-bit Live DVDs
The Micro-R OS distro can be downloaded via Softoware or directly from the project’s homepage (see link below) as Live DVD ISO images that are usable on computers supporting other of the 64-bit (x86_64) or 32-bit (x86) instruction set architectures. At the moment, the ISO files are hosted on MEGA. They can be written to either blank DVD discs or USB thumb drives of 2GB or higher capacity (recommended).
Standard boot options
Being based on Ubuntu, the Live DVDs come with standard boot options, such as the ability to start the live system with normal configuration or in safe graphics mode, start the installer directly and install the operating system on your computer, along with or replacing existing OSes, perform a throughput system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot the local drive.
Cinnamon is in charge of the default graphical environment
The operating system uses Cinnamon as its default graphical environment, but the GNOME Fallback (GNOME Classic) is also included and can be selected from the login prompt, where you’ll have to use the “micro-r” password (without quotes) to log into the graphical session.
The distro contains a great selection of open-source programs, among which we can mention the Mozilla Firefox web browser, and several educational apps.
Try Micro-R OS Lite
If Micro-R OS includes way too many programs and features for your needs, you should try the Micro-R OS Lite edition instead, as it offers a smaller set of open source programs. It is availble for download on Softoware!
