Manjaro Linux MATE Community Edition is an open source, community driven edition of the well known Manjaro Linux operating system. It is build around the lightweight MATE desktop environment, a clone of GNOME 2.

Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs

The system is distributed as Live DVD ISO images that can be deployed on any 64-bit or 32-bit compatible computer. It is engineered to be used on low-end machines that no longer support resource hungry operating systems.

Offers a rolling-release model

It is based on the powerful Arch Linux distribution and follows a rolling-release model, which keeps your entire system up-to-date, for a very long period of time, without the need to download new ISO images and manually upgrade.

Boot options

The boot menu is identical to the one used on other Majaro flavors, allowing users to boot the computing environment that is currently installed on your machine, test the RAM memory, or to view if their hardware components are supported.

In addition, you can install Manjaro directly from the boot menu. However, we strongly suggest to test it before installing it, using the first option on the boot medium or the second one if you want to use proprietary drivers (recommended only for ATI/AMD and Nvidia users).

MATE is the default desktop environment

The MATE environment will provide users with a very fast and clean GNOME 2 style desktop experience. It’s comprised of two panels, on at the top of the screen and another one at the bottom.

Default applications

Default applications include the Caja file manager, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Transmission torrent downloader, HexChat IRC client, LibreOffice Writer and Calc, Xnoise music player, pluma text editor, and Viewnior image viewer.

Bottom line

We recommend the MATE edition to all GNOME 2 nostalgics, as well as to those of you who want to bring an old computer to life again. Alternatively, you can also used the Manjaro Linux LXDE and Openbox editions.
