LinuxBBQ Darkside is an open source distribution of Linux based on the Crunchbang distro, which in turn is based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system, and built around the minimal and fast Openbox window manager.

Available for download as 32-bit/64-bit Live CDs

This special LinuxBBQ edition can be downloaded through Softoware or directly from its official website as Live CD ISO images of approximately 700MB in size each, designed to run on both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) computers.

Boot options

From the boot prompt, the user can start the live environment with default boot options, with support for Intel video cards, by copying the contents of the ISO image to RAM (system memory), with the VGA or nomode options, in failsafe mode, as well as with SysV. In addition, you can run a memory test or boot from the first disk.

Super fast and lightweight graphical session powered by Openbox

As mentioned, the distribution comes with the Openbox window manager, which has been designed in such a way to provide users with a top panel for quick access to system tray functions, as well as to cycle between virtual workspace and interact with running programs.

The main menu, from where you can launch applications, can be accessed by right clicking anywhere on the desktop. Please note that the default username/password combination for the Live CDs is bbq/bbq.

Includes both graphical and CLI applications

The good news is that this special LinuxBBQ edition includes both graphical and CLI (Command-line Interface) applications, as well as the usual BBQ tools. Among some of the most popular ones, we can mention the VLC Media Player, Viewnior image viewer, AbiWord word processor, Iceweasel web browser, GIMP image editor and Gnumeric spreadsheet editor.

Bottom line

All in all, the Darkside edition of LinuxBBQ is a very stable and reliable operating system that uses an extremely fast window manager on top of a Crunchbang/Debian base. You should also try the Lightside of LinuxBBQ, which features less applications than this edition.
