Koha Live DVD is a freely distributed operating system based on the popular Xubuntu Linux distribution and built around the Koha open source ILS (Integrated Library System). It uses a classic GNOME 2 session as its default and only desktop environment.

Availability and supported platforms

The distribution is available for download as two Live DVD ISO images of approximately 1 GB in size each, which means that the user can write them to DVD discs or USB thumb drives of 1GB or higher capacity. Supported platforms include 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64).

Boot options

The Live DVDs come with a standard boot menu that allows the user to start the live environment with default options or in safe graphics mode (xforcevesa), permanently install the operating system on a local drive, perform a system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing OS from the first disk.

Traditional desktop environment powered by GNOME

As mentioned, the default and only desktop environment of Koha Live DVD is GNOME 2, providing users with a traditional graphical desktop session that uses a two-panel layout. While you can easily interact with running programs from the bottom panel, it is possible to quickly launch applications from the top panel.

A standard suite of open source applications

There's nothing spectacular on the application front, as the distribution comes with a standard suite of open source apps and desktop tools, among which we can mention Mozilla Firefox, LibreOffice, Gwibber, Transmission, Empathy, Remmina, Brasero, Totem, Rhythmbox, Orca, BleachBit, Shotwell, Simple Scan, and Leafpad.

Bottom line

Summing up, the sole purpose of this Linux distribution is to provide users with a working, ready-to-use installation of the Koha Integrated Library System (ILS), using a stable Linux base powered by Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) and using the classic GNOME desktop interface.
