JULinux

JULinux is a freely distributed and open source Linux kernel-based operating system derived from the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and geared towards Windows users who want to replace their deprecated Windows XP system with a Linux distribution.

Runs directly from the Live media, but only on 64-bit computers

The distribution has been designed to support only 64-bit (x86_64) computers. It is distributed as a Live DVD ISO image that has approximately 1.5GB in size and must be written to either a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

The boot options are pretty standard, you can boot the OS in live mode

From the boot menu of the Live DVD, the user can start the live system with the default kernel or in safe graphics mode, start the installer directly, perform a system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system that is currently installed on the local drive.

The graphical interface is slick, based on Xfce

The main graphical session of JULinux is built around the Xfce desktop environment. It looks very slick, comprised of a semi-transparent panel located on the bottom edge of the screen, which includes the main menu, the taskbar and the system tray area.

The panel can also be used as a dock (application launcher) as you can easily drag and drop application shortcuts onto it. Do not hesitate to read the Readme.txt file from the desktop if you want to know more about how to setup the distribution.

Comes pre-loaded with several useful applications

Default applications include the Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, AbiWord word processor, GIMP image editor, Xiphos Bible guide, Transmission torrent downloader, SeaMonkey all-in-one Internet suite, XChat IRC client, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, as well as Midori and Chromium web browsers.
