TOP Linux Unlimited Edition is yet another edition of the TOP (Tacky Optimizing Puppy) Linux operating system, this time including a vast amount of applications, as well as a more complex desktop environment, still powered by the IceWM window manager.
It’s distributed as a dual-arch Live CD
The Ultimate edition of TOP Linux is distributed as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image, which has been engineered to be used on computers supporting either of the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures. The ISO image fits perfectly on a CD disc.
Boot menu à la Puppy Linux
The Live CD boot menu is identical with the one of the Puppy Linux operating system, designed to automatically start the live system with normal configuration in exactly eight minutes from the moment the user boots the ISO image from the BIOS of a computer. Pressing the F2 key at the boot prompt will give you access to a list of available boot options.
First time configuration
Before you can access and use the desktop session, you are required to choose a mouse type, select a keyboard layout, as well as to choose between the X.Org (for newer video cards) and VESA (for older video cards) display servers. In addition, you’ll be asked if you want to enable desktop apps, and you can change the screen resolution.
Simple, clean, familiar and traditional desktop interface
IceWM is still in charge of the graphical environment of TOP Linux, providing users with a simple, clean and traditional desktop interface that comprises of a bottom panel (taskbar), a dock (application launcher) located on the upper part of the screen and hidden by default, as well as a system monitoring widget placed on the right side of the screen.
Comes pre-loaded with dozens of open-source apps
As mentioned, the Ultimate edition of TOP Linux comes pre-loaded with dozens of open-source apps, among which we can mention the OpenOffice.org office suite, AbiWord word processor, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, as well as Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client.
