OpenLX is an open source distribution of Linux based on the Linux Mint operating system, which in turn is based on the world’s most popular free OS, Ubuntu, and built around the KDE Plasma desktop environment.
Available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD
Users can download the OpenLX operating system from Softoware or its official website as a single, dual-arch Live DVD ISO image of approximately 3.5GB in size, supporting both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i386) instruction set architectures. Please note that you must write the ISO image to a DVD disc or USB flash drive in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.
Boot options
Being based on Linux Mint and Ubuntu, the system uses a standard boot prompt that allows the user to try the live environment without installing, on 32-bit or 64-bit platforms, perform a system memory diagnostic test, check the disc for defects (only if booting from a DVD media), as well as to directly start the installer.
Standard KDE Plasma desktop environment
As mentioned, the distribution comes with the KDE Plasma Workspaces and Applications desktop environment, which provides users with a modern, attractive and productive graphical interface that comprises of a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen, offering quick access to installed applications or running programs.
Default applications
Default applications include the Amarok audio player, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Konversation IRC client, KDE IM Contacts and Pidgin instant messengers, FileZilla and gFTP file transfer clients, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, FreeCAD and LibreCAD CAD programs, Blender 3D graphics renderer, Darktable virtual lighttable and darkroom, and Inkscape vector graphics editor.
