gm.linux is a freely distributed and open source Ubuntu derivative tailored for mathematical modeling and simulation research projects. The distro is based on the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) operating system and built around the

Distributed as a dual-arch Live DVD

The distro is available for download as a dual-arch and hybrid Live DVD ISO image that can be used on computers supporting either of the 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i386) hardware architectures.

In order to boot the operating system, you must download the ISO image, which has approximately 4 GB in size, write it on a single-layer DVD disc or a USB thumb drive of 4GB or higher capacity, and boot it from the BIOS of the PC.

Offers standard boot options

The Live DVD boot menu offers standard options, such as the ability to start the live system with normal configuration or in safe graphics mode using the xforcevesa option, start the installer directly, perform a memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the local disk drive.

Uses the Unity desktop environment

The controversial, modern and attractive Unity desktop environment is used by default in gm.linux. It looks and acts the same as on any other Ubuntu-based distribution that uses Unity. Various shortcuts for mathematical modeling and simulation research applications have been added to the Unity Launcher, including RStudio, wxMaxima, Salome, Helyxos, OpenFOAM, Shiny, R, R Commander and Jabref.

Default applications

Besides the aforementioned scientific apps, the distribution includes a wide variety of open source software projects, among which we can mention Audacity audio editor, Deja Dup backup software, Mozilla Firefox web browser, LibreOffice office suite, Empathy multi-protocol instant messenger, Okular and Evince document viewers, Totem movie player, Disks disk utility, Rhythmbox music player, as well as Synaptic Package Manager for installing additional packages.
