Edulux is an open source operating system based on the Xfce edition of the widely used Linux Mint distribution, which in turn is based on the world's most popular free OS, Ubuntu. It includes all sorts of educational software, support for the Russian language, the Xfce desktop environment and free software for the Wiimote Whiteboard device.
Distributed as a 32-bit Live DVD
Users can download this custom Linux Mint operating system as a Live DVD ISO image that has been engineered to support only 32-bit applications. The ISO image has approximately 3GB in size and will run on both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i386) hardware platforms.
Boot options
The Live DVD has been programmed to automatically boot the live environment with default options and drivers in ten seconds, if no keyboard key is pressed. The boot menu can be accessed by pressing any keyboard key during the 10-second timeout and will allow the user to start the live session in compatibility mode, perform a memory test and boot from the local drive.
Familiar and responsive desktop environment powered by Xfce
The Xfce desktop environment is quite responsive and provides users with a familiar setup comprised of a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where the user can easily and quickly launch applications and interact with running programs.
Comes with a wide range of applications, including educational ones
Among the preinstalled applications, we can mention VLC Media Player, LiVES video editing system, ISO Master CD image editor and burner, Chromium and Mozilla Firefox web browsers, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Transmission torrent downloader, GeoGebra geometry software, Stellarium planetarium software, and Scilab numerical computational program.
Bottom line
Summing up, Edulux is a pretty good, quite stable and more than reliable operating system that uses the lightweight Xfce desktop environment and a plethora of open source applications on top of a rock-solid Linux Mint/Ubuntu base.
