TurnKey File Server Live CD is an open source operating system based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux, as well as AjaXplorer and Samba. It is designed from the ground up to be used by people who are looking for a straightforward and free solution for deploying a dedicated file hosting server.
Key features include support for FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol), a Webmin module for configuring Samba, the rsync file transfer protocol, support for popular compression formats, such as bz2, rar or zip, and out-of-the-box support for secure connections.
It also features a handy utility for converting text file endings between DOS and UNIX formats, as well as upstream Samba configurations, which include pre-configured workgroup (WORKGROUP) and NetBIOS name (FILESERVER), synchronization of users and groups, and root as Samba admin user.
Among the configured shares, we can mention users' home directory, public storage, and CD/DVD-ROM devices with automount and umount hooks located on /media/cdrom. Futhermore, the default storage is /srv/storage.
Users can access their files securely from anywhere using the included AjaXplorer software, which provides users with a modern web-based user interface, dedicated applications for Android and iOS devices, dran and drop support, as well as pre-configured multi-authentication and repositories.
While the file server can be easily accessed via the command-line or through Samba, the default username for Webshell, Webmin, SSH and Samba is root, and the default AjaXplorer usernames are admin (Local) and root (Samba).
The appliance is distributed as Live CD ISO images, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, as well as ready-to-use virtual machine images for the OpenStack, OpenNode, OpenVZ, OVF and Xen virtualization technologies.
It can be easily installed on any computer using the Live CDs. The entire installation process is painless and takes a few minutes, allowing users to partition the disk drive and choose where to install the boot loader.
What is new in this release:
- WebDAV CGI supersedes SambaDAV (#563).
- Recycle bin is enabled by default in all shares (#468).
- Logging into the web interface uses the same user database as Samba (#449).
