PlumeOS is an open source distribution of Linux that uses the KDE Plasma Workspaces and Applications project as its default desktop environment, and the stable base of the well known openSUSE Linux operating system.

The distribution comes with built-in support for multimedia file, an easy to use network manager, as well as support for reading and writing on NTFS and FAT disk drivers. In addition, the Live DVD can be used as a tool for booting an existing OS or to run a memory test.

Distributed as Live and Install DVDs

It is distributed as a single Live DVD ISO image that be used to run the live environment as-is, directly from the boot medium, as well as an installable-only ISO image that allows users to install the operating system without testing it.

Uses the KDE desktop environment

As mentioned, PlumeOS uses the KDE desktop environment, which is comprised of single taskbar, from where users can access the main menu and launch their favorite application, as well as to interact with running apps and the system tray area.

While the live environment defaults to the French language, users can change it after installation by adding any other supported language pack from the default software repositories. Furthermore, the installation media also uses the French language by default.

Default applications

Default applications include the Rekonq and Konqueror web browsers, Clementine music player, VLC Media Player, K3b CD/DVD burning software, Gwenview image viewer, Krita digital painting software, KWrite text editor, and Okular document viewer.

In addition, it also comes with the Calligra Words, Sheets and Stage applications, the Dolphin file manager, Ark archive manager, and the SUSE Studio Imagewriter utility for deploying ISO images to USB thumb drives.

Bottom line

All in all, if you’re a French user, you can download the PlumeOS distribution and see if it is good for your daily computing needs. The KDE desktop environment is accessible and modern, but it can only be used on high-end machine.
