HandyLinux Light is an open-source and completely free distribution of Linux derived from the award-winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system. It is a special edition of HandyLinux Light that uses a lightweight graphical desktop environment and software selection, suitable for low-end machines or computers with old and semi-old hardware components.

It’s distributed as multilingual Live CDs for the 32-bit architecture

Being designed from the ground up to run on slow computers, HandyLinux Light is distributed as two Live CD ISO images that support the i686 and i486 32-bit instruction set architectures. An Add-on CD that contains additional software packages is also available for download.

The Live CDs support various languages and only 32-bit applications, despite the fact that they are bootable on 64-bit machines. Supported languages include English and French.

You can try the distribution before installing it

From the boot prompt, the user can try the distribution without installing it, with default graphics stack or in safe graphics mode by using the failsafe option. In addition, you can start the graphical installer directly and permanently install the OS on a local drive.

Xfce is in charge of the default graphical session

The lightweight graphical desktop environment used in HandyLinux Light is Xfce, which provides users with a traditional and familiar interface comprised of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen. However, before you can access the graphical session, you must choose a keyboard layout.

The best thing about the graphical interface of HandyLinux is that it uses its unique main menu that allows anyone to find and launch applications or configure important system functions.

There are only a few apps included

HandyLinux Light includes a very lightweight set of software packages. Many of them are missing or not working, despite the fact that they are still displayed on the main menu. Of course, this means that you must also download the Add-on CD in order to have access to all the HandyLinux applications.
