As its name suggests, Ubuntu GNOME Shell Remix is an open-source and completely free distribution of Linux based off of Ubuntu and built around the GNOME graphical desktop environment with the modern GNOME Shell interface.

It’s available for mainstream architectures, distributed as Live DVDs

The operating system is available for download as two Live DVD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms, 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64). They are hybrid ISO images, which means that you can write them on DVD discs or USB thumb drives.

Basic boot prompt with advanced options

While the boot prompt is very basic and has been instructed to start the live system with default kernel parameters in about seven seconds from the moment the user boots the ISO image from the BIOS of a PC, it inform users about the advanced boot options.

Among these, we can mention the ability to try the operating system without installing it, start the installer directly, perform a system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive.

GNOME with GNOME Shell or GNOME Fallback

Both GNOME interfaces are included in this unofficial Ubuntu remix, the modern GNOME Shell for 3D-enabled graphics cards and GNOME Fallback for low-end computers that have only a 2D GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).

It comes with a standard set of GNOME-specific applications

Default applications include the Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Empathy multi-protocol instant messenger, LibreOffice office suite, Banshee music manager and player, Totem video player, Evolution email and calendar, Cheese webcam viewer and Ubuntu Software Center.

The best way to try the GNOME desktop environment on Ubuntu

Summing up, Ubuntu GNOME Shell Remix is a neat distribution of Linux that provides users with the best way to try the controversial GNOME desktop environment on Ubuntu.
