Ubuntu Classic

As its name might suggest, Ubuntu Classic is an open source operating system based on the world’s most popular free distribution of Linux, Ubuntu, and built around the GNOME Fallback desktop environment, which was previously known as GNOME Classic.

Available for download as a 64-bit Live DVD

This Ubuntu-based distribution is available for download as a Live DVD ISO image that will run only on 64-bit (x86_64) computers. For that, the user must first burn the ISO image onto a blank DVD disc or write it on a USB thumb drive of 1GB or higher capacity.

Boot options

The boot prompt is very standard for an Ubuntu-based distro, seen in a plethora of Ubuntu derivatives. It will allow the user to start the live environment with default boot options or in safe graphics mode, start the installer directly, run a memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot the first disk drive.

Features a classic graphical desktop environment with a two-panel layout

The main emphasis of this operating system is on the GNOME Classic graphical desktop environment, which uses a two-panel layout and the usual dark theme that was available on previous releases of the Ubuntu OS.

As usual, the top panel can be used to launch applications and the bottom one for interacting with them, as well as to easily cycle between the virtual workspaces.

Includes standard Ubuntu applications

Default applications include the Deja Dup backup tool, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Transmission torrent downloader, Rhythmbox music player, Totem video player, Cheese webcam viewer, Brasero CD/DVD burning software, as well as the entire LibreOffice office suite.

Bottom line

Summing up, Ubuntu Classic is a great operating system that tries to keep things classic, traditional, by replacing the modern and sophisticated Unity interface with GNOME Classic.

What is new in this release:

• Bug with the unity greater has been fixed thanks to MrVaykadji
• LibreOffice 4.1.5.3 installed out of the box, however once LibreOffice 4.2.0 come out of RC and is avalable through the LO 4.2 launchpad ppa, the updater will include this in its list when updating the system and LO will be uplifted to 4.2.0.X.
• Shotwell 0.14.1
• Certain Gnome applications have been uplifted to 3.6.X (This INCLUDES Nautilus)
• Rhythmbox 2.98
• Improvements to the desktop enviorment to better fit with the "Ambiance" theme

What is new in version 13.08:
