SparkyLinux Rescue is an open source Linux distribution built around the Openbox window manager and based on the latest stable branch of the Debian GNU/Linux operating system. SparkyLinux is generally a fast, simple and intuitive Linux distribution that supports most wireless and wired network cards, automatically detects most of your hardware components, and is distributed into multiple editions (with different desktop environments).

Distributed as 64-bit and 32-bit Live DVDs

The system is distributed as two Live DVD ISO images that can be easily installed on blank DVDs or USB flash drives. It supports both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. It is supported in many languages, including Romanian, Chinese, German, Arabic, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Swedish, Dutch, French, Danish, Hindi, Hebrew, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish, Greek, Slovak, Czech, Italian, Hungarian, and English.

Boot options

Besides booting the live environment in your favorite language, the boot medium can be used to boot the operating system that is currently installed on the first disk drive, or test your computer’s memory (RAM) for errors. Additionally, if you encounter graphical issues with the default boot options, you can use the failsafe or text modes and start the graphical desktop from there.

Features the Openbox window manager

As mentioned, the live session is powered by the Openbox window manager, which provides users with a traditional desktop experience. It is comprised of a single panel, located at the bottom of the screen and used for launching applications, switching between virtual workstations, and interact with opened windows or the system tray area.

Default applications

Default applications include the Icedove email client (fork of Mozilla Thunderbird), Iceweasel web browser (fork of Mozilla Firefox), Licq instant messenger, Hotot Twitter client, qBittorrent torrent downloader, Quassel IRC client, uGet download manager, Exaile music player, and SMPlayer video player.

Additionally, the distribution also includes VLC Media Player, TeamViewer, DeVeDe, RecordMyDesktop, Xfburn, Sound Converter, Radio Tray, GIMP, Minitube, OGMRip, Avidemux, Audacity, qcomicbook, Camorama, PCManFM, Leafpad, JuffEd, Parcellite, and the entire LibreOffice office suite.

Bottom line

During our tests, the SparkyLinux Rescue distribution proved to be quite stable and responsive. We strongly recommend it for all your rescue and recovery needs.
