As its name suggests, Semi-Automatic OS is an open source virtual operating system that includes the QGIS 2.0 Semi-Automatic Classification plugin, which is pre-configured along with all its dependencies, such as SAGA GIS, Orfeo Toolbox, GDAL, Matplotlib and Numpy.

Distributed as a virtual machine disk

The Semi-Automatic OS Linux distribution is based on the Ubuntu operating system, supports both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures and it is distributed as a virtual machine disk engineered to require very little hardware resources and compatible with the VirtualBox or VMWare virtualization software.

The VMDK image is archived with the 7zip (7z) format and it is fully compatible with the aforementioned virtualization software running on GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X operating systems.

Boot options

From the GRUB bootloader, the user will be able to start the operating system with default boot options or advanced options, as well as to perform a system memory diagnostic test using the powerful Memtest86+ utility.

Familiar desktop environment powered by LXDE

The default and only desktop environment of this virtual appliance is LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), which gives you a familiar feeling. It comprises of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where users can launch applications or interact with opened programs.

Includes a minimal set of applications

A minimal set of applications is included in this Ubuntu-based distribution, among which we can mention the PCManFM file manager, Leafpad text editor, Midori web browser, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, GRASS GIS geographic resources analysis support system, QGIS and SAGA GIS geographic information systems.

Bottom line

Summing up, Semi-Automatic OS is a great appliance for scientists who want a very portable operating system that helps them to process and analyze geodata with minimum effort and in a shortest time as possible.

What is new in this release:

  • It includes the Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin v. 3.1.2 and the brand new QGIS 2.6, already configured along with all the required dependencies (OGR, GDAL, Numpy, SciPy, and Matplotlib).

What is new in version 3.1.0:

  • It includes the Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin v. 3.1.2 and the brand new QGIS 2.6, already configured along with all the required dependencies (OGR, GDAL, Numpy, SciPy, and Matplotlib).

What is new in version 3.0.2:

  • The Semi-Automatic OS v. 3.0.2 is a lightweight virtual machine for the land cover classification of remote sensing images. It includes the Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin v. 3.0.2 and QGIS 2.4, already configured along with all the required dependencies (OGR, GDAL, Numpy, SciPy, and Matplotlib).
  • The main change is that now the Semi-Automatic OS is based on Debian.
  • The Semi-Automatic OS is based on Debian 7 32-bit, and it is designed to require very little hardware resources. It uses LXDE and Openbox as main desktop environment. This virtual machine can be useful for testing the Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin, or when the installation of the required programs in the host system is problematic.
  • The Semi-Automatic OS is available as a virtual machine that can be run in the open source VirtualBox, or any other virtualization program. The following is a guide for the installation of the Semi-Automatic OS in the open source program of virtualization VirtualBox.

What is new in version 2.0.1:

  • New version of the Semi-Automatic OS (a lightweight virtual machine for the land cover classification of remote sensing images and GIS analyses) includes the Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin 2.1.4 for QGIS 2.0.1, already configured along with all the required dependencies (Orfeo Toolbox, SAGA GIS, GDAL, Numpy and Matplotlib).
  • Also, an issue with the network configuration for VirtualBox has been fixed.
