aLinux

aLinux (formerly known as Peanut Linux) is an open source distribution of Linux designed from the ground up to be replaces commercial operating systems like Windows 8, Windows Vista, Windows XP and Mac OS X. It is an independent distro that uses the RPM Package Manager.

Available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD

The distribution is available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image of approximately 1.4GB in size, suitable for either a 32-bit (i386) or 64-bit (x86_64) computer and deployable on a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive of 2GB or higher capacity.

Boot options

When booting the DVD image from the BIOS of a PC, the user will be prompted by a boot loader, from where he or she can start the live system with a specific screen resolution (1280x1024, 1024x768, 800x600 or 640x480), start the live OS in safe graphics mode, or boot an existing operating system from the first disk.

Windows-like graphical desktop environment powered by KDE Plasma

As mentioned, the main emphasis is on the newbie-friendly graphical desktop environment, which is powered by KDE Plasma and has been designed to look like a Windows Vista desktop.

It features the same window decoration, a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen, with an obvious Start button, as well as a system monitoring desktop widget. Be aware though, that you must log in using the root/root username/password combination.

Includes mostly KDE-specific applications

The OS includes mostly KDE-specific applications, but also some third-party ones like the Skype VoIP client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, XMMS audio player, as well as the powerful Synaptic Package Manager modified for RPM packages.

If you are tired of viruses, spyware, trojans, and any other type of malware, do not hesitate to download and install the aLinux operating system, as it will free your computer and make your day a little bit more enjoyable.

What is new in this release:

• aLinux 15.0 released, updates the graphical installer, dialogues, etc., easier to install. Same old system but with just enough updates to be 'usable'. KDE 3.5.10, X.Org 7.7, glibc 2.17, GCC 4.7.2, Linux kernel 2.6.34.14, Perl 5.16.2, Skype 4.1.0.20 (MSN and Windows Live support). Main web browser is Firefox 17.0.1. Distro is optimized for i686 now. Kopete has been removed and replaced with Pidgin messenger. It's still a distro aimed at computers from the past (mine included), so if you're looking for the latest bleeding edge, you won't find it here, but if you're looking for something a bit more complete from a past 'yesterday' operating system that still manages to work in 2013, this may suit you.

What is new in version 12.8:

• The API was changed by updating to glibc 2.4 and GCC 4.1.1.
• Other updates include KDE 3.5.3 and KOffice 1.5.2. Xorg was removed and replaced with XFree86 4.6.0.
• The Linux kernel version is 2.6.17 with IVTV.
• A MultiMedia desktop was added for high definition users.
