RONIN is a free and open source Lubuntu-based operating system that features numerous security-related applications for data forensics and penetration testing tasks, a process-driven menu system, resource links, update system,a marketplace and its own software repository.

Distributed as a 32-bit Live DVD

It is a Lubuntu remix that’s distributed as a 32-bit Live DVD ISO image, tagged with the i386 architecture. This means that you can uses on 64-bit or 32-bit computers, but will only support 32-bit applications.

Boot prompt à la Lubuntu/Ubuntu

When booting the Live DVD from the BIOS of a PC, the user will be prompted by a boot screen that is identical in functionality with the one in Lubuntu, allowing you to try RONIN without installing it, start the graphical installer, check the disk for defects (only if using a DVD media), run a memory test and boot from the first disk.

Traditional and super fast graphical environment powered by LXDE

Being based on Lubuntu, the distirbution uses LXDE (Lighteweight X11 Desktop Environment) for the graphical session. It comprises of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where users can launch their favorite apps, cycle between the two virtual workspaces or interact with running programs.

Includes a wide range of penetration testing tools

As mentioned, the main emphasis of this distro is on pentesting. Because of this, it includes a special entry in the main menu, called RONIN, which includes a wide range of penetration testing tools organized in categories and subcategories.

Default applications

Default applications include the Chromium and Mozilla Firefox web browser, Xpad note-taking app, PCManFM file manager, Leafpad text editor, Arduino IDE, GIMP image editor, Dia diagram creator, LibreOffice office suite, Pidgin instant messenger, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, Audacious audio player, GNOME MPlayer, VLC Media Player and Google Earth.

Bottom line

The distribution's primary objective is to provide users with a light and fast desktop-oriented operating system that includes a bunch of security utilities and resources that are relevant for instructors, security professionals and enthusiasts alike.
