phpBB

phpBB is an open source package that allows self-hosted website owners to create a full-purpose message board. If you're tired of using free forums, where you're a slave to the host site's code and policy changes, consider purchasing your own domain name and a hosting package. Once completed, you can install phpBB or another open-source message board package like Simple Machines Forum and start creating your board from the ground up.

phpBB offers a complete administration panel, with the creation of a forum tree system, the ability to create groups, choose a theme and alter the layout to your tastes. phpBB really has you covered. phpBB is relatively easy to install for most people who have a moderate understanding of message board code. Another nice feature is the support forum directly on phpBB's website, where you can get helpful tips if you're encountering difficulties. The only real downside is that phpBB can be a little heavy on resources and not as fast as some users might want.
