Pak Linux is a distribution of Linux based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and designed from the ground up for members of the Urdu Linux community. This is the main edition and features the MATE desktop environment.

Distributed in multiple editions, as Live DVDs and Live CDs

The Pak Linux operating system is distributed in multiple editions, as Live DVD and Live CD ISO images, with the MATE, Xfce and GNOME desktop environments. Supported architectures include 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i386). You must write these ISO images to DVD or CD discs, as well as on USB flash drives of 1GB or higher capacity in order to boot them from the BIOS of a PC.

Boot options

The beautified boot menu will allow the user to try the operating system without installing anything on his or her computer, perform a system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing OS that is installed on the first disk drive. The default language on the boot prompt is English, but the live environment uses the Urdu language.

Traditional desktop environment powered by MATE

As mentioned, this is the main edition of Pak Linux and it features the MATE desktop environment, which uses a two-panel layout. While the bottom panel has been designed in such a way that it allows the user to easily interact with opened programs or quickly switch between virtual workspaces, the top panel will help you to launch applications safely and without to much fuss. On the login prompt, use the ‘paklinux’ username without any password.

Default applications

Default applications include the Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, GPicView image viewer, Shutter screenshot utility, mtPaint digital painting tool, Mozilla Firefox web browser, gFTP file transfer client, uGet download manager, Transmission torrent downloader, Audacious audio player and PiTiVi video editor.

Bottom line

Overall, the main edition of Pak Linux proves to be a decent distribution of Linux that features a traditional and familiar desktop environment in the style of the GNOME Classic graphical interface. Also, do not hesitate to try the Xfce and GNOME editions of Pak Linux!
