As its name suggests, BootMed (boot medic) is a completely free Ubuntu-based operating system oriented towards average Windows users who are looking for an easy to use data recovery and system restore solution based on open-source technologies.

It’s distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live CDs

The distribution can be downloaded via Softoware or directly from the project’s website as two Live CD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms, 32-bit and 64-bit.

Boot menu à la Ubuntu Linux

This is yet another Ubuntu remix that uses the same boot functionality as the upstream operating system, which means that the Live CDs will boot automatically and load the live system.

To reveal the boot menu, press any key on your keyboard during the initial boot timeout. It will allow you to try the operating system without installing anything on your computer, perform a memory test, boot from the local drive, as well as to start the graphical installer directly.

Boots straight into DIY recovery tutorials

The Live CDs have been designed to automatically load the default web browser and present users with a bunch of BootMed tutorial about how to recover data from damaged partitions, as well as to rescue a broken Windows installation.

The graphical session is built around Xfce

Xfce is the pillar of the graphical session inside BootMed, providing users with a traditional and easy to use desktop environment. It is comprised of a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen and designed to allow you to easily launch applications or interact with opened programs.

Contains only a few applications

As the distro has been designed with a single goal in mind, to provide various system rescue and data recovery tutorials to the average Windows user, it contains only a few applications, among which we can mention Mozilla Firefox, Thunar, GParted, Catfish and Synaptic Package Manager.
