Overclockix is an open source distribution of Linux derived from the award winning, powerful, widely-used and highly acclaimed Debian GNU/Linux operating system and built around the GNOME desktop environment. It includes various tools for overclockers.

Distributed as 32-bit/64-bit Live CDs

The distribution can be downloaded from its official website or via Softoware as two Live CD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms, 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64). The ISO images have approximately 650MB in size each, and must be deployed to either CD discs or USB flash drives.

Boot options

From the boot screen, the user can start the live environment with default boot options or in safe graphics mode (failsafe). In addition, it is possible to view detailed information about the hardware components of the respective computer, by accessing the advanced options.

The default graphical desktop environment is GNOME

As mentioned, the distribution is built around the GNOME desktop environment, which will fallback to the classic, two-panel setup if no 3D graphics card driver is detected. Otherwise, it provides users with a pure GNOME session powered by GNOME Shell.

Includes various applications for overclockers

The main emphasis of Overclockix is on the tools for overclockers, among which we can mention Phoronix Test Suite and System Profiler and Benchmark. Other applications include the VLC Media Player, Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Empathy and Pidgin instant messengers, Iceweasel web browser and Wireshark network scanner.

Bottom line

Summing up, Overclockix is a cool and simple distribution of Linux that can be used not only by overclockers and hardware enthusiasts. It offers a pure GNOME desktop experience, and a handful of applications for achieving your daily tasks and ultimately your goals.

It works well on low-end machines using the GNOME Fallback interface, and it’s ultra fast on high-end computers using the modern GNOME Shell user interface.
