Opera OS is an open source and free distribution of Linux based on the SliTaz GNU/Linux operating system and built around the Opera web browser. It features the latest version of the Opera web browser for Linux (with Adobe Flash Player).

Downloadable as a minimal, dual-arch Live CD

This custom SliTaz GNU/Linux distribution is downloadable as a minimal, dual-arch Live CD ISO image of approximately 70MB in size, designed to run on either 32-bit (i386) or 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms. Please note that you must burn the ISO image to a CD, mini CD or USB flash drive in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

Boot baby… boot!

There’s a very minimal boot prompt on the ISO image, which has been instructed to automatically start the live environment with default boot options. However, it is possible to override the boot options by adding support for another language (English is default), boot the last version from the Internet by typing “web” (without quotes), as well as to add extra kernel parameters.

The graphical desktop environment is very minimal, built around the Opera web browser

In order to use the desktop environment, the user must first choose a sound card to configure. After that, the graphical session will load and it comprises of the Opera web browser and a custom panel located on the upper side of the screen, from where the user can open a new Opera tab, setup various hardware components, as well as to logout, reboot or shutdown the computer.

Bottom line

In conclusion, Opera OS is a small and fast operating system that can boot in approximately 6 seconds (from the boot loader) and requires a computer with only 128MB of RAM, and facilitates Wi-Fi networks connections. Keep in mind though, that is has been designed to run as-is directly from the bootable medium (it cannot be installed).
