Manjaro Linux Openbox is an open source Linux distribution based on the Arch Linux operating system and built around the Openbox desktop environment. It is also known as the Openbox edition of Manjaro Linux and it’s mainly designed for low-end computers. Manjaro Linux is a free operating system that features several editions, with the GNOME, Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, KDE, LXDE, Awesome, Enlightenment (E17), and Fluxbox desktop environments.

Distributed as 32-bit/64-bit Live CDs

Just like any other Manjaro flavour, the Openbox edition is distributed with a Live CD for each supported architecture (64-bit and 32-bit at the moment). On boot, it presents the same entries like the other Manjaro editions, allowing users to start the live environment with the default settings or with non-free drivers. Moreover, the Live CD can be used to boot the operating system that is currently installed on your PC or laptop, detect your computer’s hardware components, as well as to test the physical memory (RAM) of your machine.

Live CD boot options

“Start Manjaro Linux” is the recommended choice for anyone who want to test or install Manjaro Linux Openbox. In a few seconds, users will be greeted by the Manjaro Linux welcome app, which provides links to the official Wiki, forums, IRC channel, mailing lists, and documentation. Those of you who don’t want to test the Live CD, can use the Welcome App to install the operating system via a graphical user interface (recommended) or via text-mode (command-line interface).

Openbox has been heavily tweaked

The desktop environment presents a distinct taskbar located on the upper part of the screen and divided into four parts, which represent the four virtual desktops, and a widget powered by the Conky application. While the Main Menu can only be access via the right mouse click, you can use the mouse wheel to quickly switch between virtual desktops.

Default applications

The default applications are as followed, Thunar file manager, LXTerminal terminal emulator, Archive Manager (File Roller), Leafpad text editor, and Midori web browser. A link to install the LibreOffice open source office suite is provided in the Office category of the Main Menu. Manjaro Linux Openbox also includes various handy utilities, such as the Nitrogen wallpaper changer, GNOME Screenshot, 7-Zip, Bulk Rename, Catfish file search, Geany IDE (Integrated Development Environment), and the Parcellite clipboard manager.

User-friendly installation

Majaro Linux’s most important feature is the user-friendly installation, which is not available on any other Arch Linux-based operating system. This homemade piece of software turned a lot of heads among the younger generation of Arch Linux users. In conclusion, if you have an old and dusty computer and you want to bring it to life, but you don't know what Linux distribution to use, we recommend Manjaro Linux Openbox.
