LOUD (LCSEE Optimized Ubuntu Distribution) Platform Project is an open source and freely distributed operating system based on the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu, and optimized for West Virginia University's LCSEE (Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering).

It’s distributed in multiple editions

LOUD is distributed in multiple editions, as ISO or IMG files, supporting both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms. It can be downloaded from the project’s website as a Desktop edition that installs a graphical desktop environment or a CLI edition that offers only a command-line environment.

Uses an interactive text-mode installer

At the boot prompt, which appears immediately after booting the ISO image from the BIOS of a computer using either a CD disc or a USB thumb drive, you must press the Enter key to start the interactive text-mode installation process, which requires you to choose a language and keyboard layout, configure the network, choose an Ubuntu mirror, download installer components and install software packages, create a user and set a password for it, as well as to install a bootloader.

It’s built around the GNOME desktop environment

The distribution is built around the GNOME desktop environment, providing users with a traditional, familiar and easy to use graphical session. It comprises of a two-panel layout, where the upper panel is used for launching applications and interact with essential system functions, and the bottom panel helps users to interact with running programs and cycle between virtual workspaces.

It is no longer under active development

Be aware that the LOUD operating system is no longer under active development, which means that it is based on a very old version of the Ubuntu Linux distribution whose software repositories are no longer online. This means that you won’t be able to install LOUD anymore. It has been archived for historical references purposes only!
