Linux Webstartup Lite is an open source and Italian Linux distribution built around the LXDE desktop environment and based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux.

The project features three main editions, Lite, Play and Whoa. While the Whoa flavor uses the astonishing Pantheon graphical environment, the Play edition uses the controversial Unity user interface.

Availability and requirements

The Linux Webstartup Lite edition is distributed as separate Full and Mini ISO images tailored to be deployed on i386 (32-bit) or x86_64 (64-bit) systems. It includes various drivers and support for Hewlett Packard (HP) printers.

It requires at least an Intel Pentium Pro, Intel Pentium 3 or AMD Athlon / Duron CPU, Intel, Nvidia or AMD graphics card, at least 512 RAM, 5.1GB free disk space for the Full version, and 4GB of free HDD space for the Mini version.

The default language on the boot menu is Italian, but it can be changed to English using the F2 key. Users can use it to boot the live environment, run a memory test, start and existing OS, or install the distribution without testing it (not recommended).

Installed applications and desktop features

The desktop environment provides users with a highly customized and beautiful LXDE session that looks pretty much the same with the Windows XP desktop. It features a single taskbar located at the bottom edge of the screen, from where users can access the main menu, switch between virtual workspaces, interact with running programs, and launch apps.

Default applications include the GNOME MPlayer video player, DeaDBeeF audio player, LibreOffice office suite, RedNotebook journal and calendar software, FBReader e-book reader, Emule P2P client, Transmission torrent downloader, Skype VoIP client, Pidgin instant messenger, Sylpheed email client, and Mozilla Firefox web browser.

Bottom line

Summing up, Linux Webstartup Lite is a good alternative for those who still own Microsoft Windows XP, which from April 8, 2014 is no longer supported and completely unsafe. It supports low-end machines and computers with old hardware components.

What is new in this release:

  • Version 1.3 brings substantial corrections to some of the defects like "kernel panic". To effectively reduce the size we used our method. It will be available in 2 versions with the software present in the Mini almost unchanged compared to the previous, while in Full will be very amazed when we tell you that you will find pre-installed in the live-cd: Libreoffice complete, Gimp complete, Gmic, Skype, Minitube, Rednotebook, Acetoneiso, FBreader, and more. All this is available on burnable ISO images to CD-Rom, respectively of the weight of the commonest 561 and 687 MB. For the wallpaper we wanted to pay homage to our beautiful town overlooking the Adriatic Sea and would see it as Poseidon.
