Hamux is an open source operating system based on the well known CentOS distribution, which in turn is based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS, and designed from the ground up to be used for by Ham Radio aficionados.

Distributed as a 64-bit Live DVD

You can freely downloaded this operating system from Softoware’s secure servers or from its official homepage as a single Live DVD ISO image that has been engineered to be used only on 64-bit hardware platforms. However, you must write it on a blank CD disc or a USB flash drive of 1GB or higher capacity in order to boot it from the BIOS of a computer.

Boot options à la CentOS

It is more than obvious that the distro is based on CentOS, as it still uses its boot menu for the Live CD, allowing the user to boot the live environment with default options, in text-mode, in safe graphics mode, perform a fresh install with default boot options or in text-mode, run a memory test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first disk.

Traditional desktop environment powered by GNOME 2

Being based on CentOS, the distribution features a traditional desktop environment powered by the almighty GNOME 2 graphical interface that uses the classic two-panel layout (the top panel can be used for launching apps and the bottom panel for interacting with them).

A great distribution for Ham Radio connoisseurs

The following Ham radio applications are included in the Hamux project: Fldigi, Flrig, Flwkey, TQSL, linrad and linpsk. In addition, the required HAM libraries are included too. Hamux Linux is compatible with the EPEL project.

Bottom line

Summing up, Hamux is a great and very stable distribution of Linux designed to be deployed on a wide range of computers, low-end, high-end and anything in between. It uses the latest upstream CentOS technologies, a fast and productive GNOME 2 desktop environment, as well as all of the open source Ham Radio utilities.
