eduCE is a freely distributed and open source distribution of Linux derived from the powerful and popular openSUSE operating system. As its name suggests, it is designed from the offset to be deployed on a network of computers inside various educational institutions, such as universities and schools.

Distributed as a dual-arch Live DVD

The eduCE distribution is available for download on Softoware, free of charge, as a dual-arch and hybrid Live DVD ISO image, which means that it is bootable on 32-bit and 64-bit (recommended) machine and can be deployed to either a DVD disc or a USB flash drive of 1GB or higher capacity (recommended).

Offers standard boot options

The Live DVD boot options are pretty standard and basic, allowing the user to boot the live system with normal configuration or in failsafe mode, in case some of his/her hardware components are not recognized correctly by the first boot option.

In addition, you will be able to boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive detected by the BIOS, perform a throughput system memory (RAM) diagnostic test, change the language, switch to a different video mode or add extra kernel parameters.

Uses the GNOME 3 desktop environment

When booting the live system, users will be dropped to a login prompt, where they’ll have to login using the predefined “Demo” username without a password. GNOME 3 is the default and only graphical desktop environment inside the eduCE distribution. Default applications include the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Nautilus file manager, LibreOffice office suite, Rhythmbox music player, as well as VLC Media Player.

Come pre-loaded with a vast amount of educational apps and games

Being designed from the ground up to server educational purposes, eduCE comes pre-loaded with a vast amount of educational applications, among which we can mention gBrainy, GNOME Chess, GCompris, Tux Math, Tux Typing, Tux Paint, and all the games from the GNOME Games project.
