Asunder is an open source project that provides Linux users with a graphical application for ripping and encode Audio-CDs, transforming them into digital audio formats. The software is multi-threaded, thus it can rip and encode Audio-CDs simultaneously. Also, it’s DE-independent, meaning that it will work on any desktop environment as long as the GTK+ toolkit is installed.

Features at a glance

Thanks to the CDDB functionality, the application will automatically tag and name each track that is ripped from a certain Audio-CD disc. In addition, the application has been engineered in such a way that it will allow tracks from different artists.

Another interesting feature is the ability to encode to multiple audio formats in a single session. It can eject the Audio-CD when the ripping process is finished, allows users to choose a destination folder for the encoded files, modify the filename formats, change CDDB servers, and configure proxy settings.

Additionally, you can change different aspects of the supported encoders, such as bitrate, quality, or compression level. It will not prompt users with stupid error messages that an Audio-CD is not inserted when opening the application, like the ripperX application does.

Supports a wide range of audio file formats

It supports numerous audio formats, including MP3, OGG, WAV, FLAC, Opus, AAC, Wavpack, Monkey's audio, and Musepack. Support for creating M3U playlists and access to the CDDB (Compact Disc Database) database are also included.

Getting started with Asunder

In order to use the application in your Linux distribution, you will need to install some packages, such as libcddb 0.9.5 or greater, cdparanoia, LAME, Vorbis-Tools, FLAC, Opus, WavPack, mpcenc, neroAacEnc, and mac.

Being written in GTK+, the program features a beautiful graphical user interface (GUI) that integrates well into the GNOME desktop environment and follows its Human Interface Guidelines(HIG), offering one of the best Audio-CDs ripping/encoding experiences found on a Linux-based operating system.
