akiraLINUX (Xubuntu) is an open source project derived from the Xfce flavor of the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and tailored for people who are looking for a low on resources, modern and fast OS for their old and semi-old computers.

Available only for the 64-bit architecture and German-speaking users

The Xubuntu edition of akiraLINUX is available for dowload as a single Live DVD ISO image engineered to support only 64-bit hardware platforms. The users must burn it onto a DVD disc or write it on a USB flash drive in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

Unfortunately for some, the Live DVD is translated only on the German language. It provides users with a basic boot loader from where they can start or install the distribution, boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive, as well as to run a system memory diagnostic test.

Step into the future with Xfce

akiraLINUX is definitely a nonconformist distribution of Linux, as all of its editions have been designed in such a way that it will prepare users for the future of desktop computing. It features a minimal panel, split into a main menu and system tray area, on upper site of the screen, as well as a dock (application launcher) on the bottom edge of the screen.

Among the preinstalled applications, we can mention Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Mozilla Firefox and Chromium web browsers, Thunar and Nautilus file managers, Ekiga softphone, Pidgin IM client, Jitsi SIP communicator, Deluge BitTorrent client, NitroShare file transfer tool, uGet download manager, LibreOffice office suite, HandBrake video converter, PiTiVi video editor, and many more.

Bottom line

In conclusion, akiraLINUX (Xubuntu) is a really great operating system that teaches Xubuntu a lot of lessons. If you like GNOME or LXDE, you should also try the Zorin OS and Lubuntu editions of akiraLINUX.
