Dvgrab is an open source command-line utility designed to help users receive the A/V data from a digital camcorder via the IEEE 1394 (FireWire) interface and to store them into an AVI file.

Dvgrab features autosplit functionality for long video sequences, a task that will split the file into several ones. It also supports saving the data as raw frames, AVI type 1 and AVI type 2.

To use the program, turn on the camera, press play, and run the command in a terminal: dvgrab --frames 200 myfilm-. If your kernel is properly configured for FireWire device drivers, Dvgrab will be able to output a file called myfilm-001.avi from about 30 MB of DV image data.
