Advene (Annotate Digital Video, Exchange on the NEt) is an ongoing project in the LIRIS laboratory (UMR 5205 CNRS) at University Claude Bernard Lyon 1. The project aims at providing a model and a format to share annotations about digital video documents (movies, courses, conferences...).

Teachers, moviegoers, etc. can use them to exchange multimedia comments and analyses about video documents. The project also aims at studying the way that communities of users (teachers, moviegoers, students...) will use these self-publishing tools to share their audiovisual "readings", and to envision new editing and viewing interfaces for interactive comment and analysis of audiovisual content.

Features:

  • At the package creation level : annotation of audiovisual documents (association of typed information to temporal fragments), creation of visualisation means (views).
  • Exchange of annotations and visualization modes in packages independently from the audiovisual material (images and sounds). If needed for the visualization of the data, pictures and sound clips can be extracted from the digital video support (e.g. file, DVD). The user of the data is then required to possess the video to take full advantage of the analysis and comments.
  • At the package use level : visualisation of augmented movie (the annotations are used to display supplementary information on the video, to control the playing of the video, to navigate the video), visualisation of hypertext documents constructed from annotation and AV material, use of ad-hoc views (e.g. timeline view).

What is new in this release:

  • This release marks the end of a series that has been stable for a long time, but never got its deserved major release number. This version now enters a maintenance state, while development focuses on the next major version (new data model, interface revamp to handle simultaneous analysis of multiple video files...).
  • This release integrates an interface to the pocketsphinx speech recognition software. Annotations can now be modified either from the timeline inspector, or from table views (in addition to previous interfaces).

What is new in version 0.46:

  • This release integrates new audio/video extraction algorithms such as face detection, audio waveform generation or silence detection. The interface has been improved in many areas, based on users requests/suggestions. A summarized change list can be found in the changelog: http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/advene/tags/0.46/CHANGES.txt?view=markup

What is new in version 0.44:

  • Among the new features, the website export can generate HTML5 tags, timecode display format can be customised, the player control interface and shortcuts has been revamped, and many interface improvements have been integrated. A summarized change list can be found in the changelog:
  • About Advene: the cross-platform Advene application allows users to easily create comments and analyses about video documents, through the definition of time-aligned annotations and their mobilisation into automatically-generated or user-written comment views (HTML documents). Annotations can also be used to modify the rendition of the audiovisual document, thus providing virtual montage, captioning, navigation... capabilities. Users can exchange their comments/analyses in the form of Advene packages, independently from the video itself. You can find more information (application, screenshots, screencasts...) on the Advene website http://www.advene.org/
  • Data can be imported from the following formats: text, SRT subtitles, ELAN, PRAAT, CMML, IRI, Anvil, MPEG7 (FreeTextAnnotations only), Xi, AnnotationGraph, shotdetect, lsdvd
  • Data can be exported to the following formats: SMIL, SVG, HTML+CSS, SRT subtitles,
  • spreadsheet, CMML, TimedText

What is new in version 0.42:

  • It brings graphics (SVG) overlay over the video, the ability to synchronously play multiple video files, a new shot validation interface for frame-precise adjustments, as well as many improvements.
  • Data can be imported from the following formats: text, SRT subtitles, ELAN, PRAAT, CMML, IRI, Anvil, MPEG7 (FreeTextAnnotations only), Xi, AnnotationGraph, shotdetect, lsdvd
  • Data can be exported to the following formats: SMIL, SVG, HTML+CSS, SRT subtitles, spreadsheet, CMML, TimedText

What is new in version 0.40:

  • gstreamer is now used on all platforms.

What is new in version 0.38:

  • It mainly integrates bug fixes (especially in the HTML editor) and some usability enhancements.

What is new in version 0.36:

  • It integrates the shotdetect application, and can display an activity trace to provide a feedback about the current activity. A new Edition history view displays the last edited/created elements. Static views can be exported as static HTML files, so that video analyses can be uploaded to a website. The MacOS X version now uses the gstreamer video player, which offers frame-by-frame navigation.
  • Data can be imported from the following formats: text, SRT subtitles, ELAN, PRAAT, CMML, IRI, Anvil, MPEG7 (FreeTextAnnotations only), Xi, AnnotationGraph, shotdetect, lsdvd.
