Super OS is a distribution of Linux derived from the Ubuntu Linux distribution and packed with a wide range of open-source application that are not included by default in the upstream OS.

Available for download as Live DVDs for mainstream hardware platforms

The distro is available for download as two Live DVD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms (32-bit and 64-bit), which must be written on DVD discs or USB thumb drives of 4GB or higher capacity.

Boot prompt à la Ubuntu Linux

When booting either of the Live DVDs from the BIOS of a PC, you will see a boot prompt that is identical with the one of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. It will automatically start the live system in approximately seven seconds, allowing you to choose between the live or install modes.

Features Unity and a plethora of open-source applications

Unity is the default graphical desktop environment of Super OS, so no surprises here. On the other hand, the distro includes a plethora of open-source applications that are not included by default in the upstream Ubuntu release.

Among some of the most popular ones, we can mention Blender 3D modeller, Audacity audio editor, Google Chrome and Opera web browsers, Inkscape vector graphics editor, MyPaint digital painting software, OpenShot and PiTiVi video editors, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Pinta image editor, VirtualBox virtualization software, VLC media Player and Wine.

Not a super operating system

Despite its pompous name, Super OS is not a super operating system. In fact, it is just an Ubuntu remix that includes extra software packages and it’s designed to provide users with offline usability.

Unfortunately, it is based on a very old version of Ubuntu, version 11.10 (dubbed Oneiric Ocelot). Because of this, we don’t recommend to install it as your only operating system.

What is new in this release:

  • New features:
  • NEW: Based on Ubuntu 11.04 (see the Ubuntu 11.04 release notes and known issues)
  • NEW: Unity 3D, the new interface introduced in Ubuntu 11.04
  • NEW: LibreOffice, replacing OpenOffice.org
  • NEW: Ayatana overlay scrollbars, to reduce used screen space
  • UPDATED: Firefox 4, Google Chrome 11 and Opera 11, all of them with support for the new webm format (Adobe Flash 10.3 in all of them)
  • UPDATED: Improved offline installation of drivers, and more drivers added: Nvidia, ATI and Broadcom and others
  • UPDATED: More software added to the local repository, like wvdial (PPP dialer) and ndiswrapper (installation of Windows WiFi drivers)
  • UPDATED: All software in the Super OS repository updated to their latest versions
  • No longer included:
  • *RealPlayer - the latest version of the program does not seem to run on 64 bits systems
  • *GParted ("Disk Utility" does essentially the same)

What is new in version 10.10:

  • NEW: Based on Ubuntu 10.10
  • NEW: Easy installation of Nvidia, ATI and Broadcom drivers, even without an internet connection (see bellow)
  • NEW: usb-creator, Live USB creator right from the DVD menu (replacing cd2usb)
  • NEW: Java re-added, replacing OpenJDK (only Java works with some banking websites)
  • NEW: All software in the Super OS repository updated to their latest versions

What is new in version 10.04:

  • The much awaited 64 bits version is now available, and includes ia32-libs to improve compatibility with 32 bits applications
  • Wubi was re-introduced after a brief absence in Super OS 9.10
  • The included cd2usb is now 100% mouse-driven: no more CLI-style interfaces
  • Java was replaced with OpenJDK, because that's what "ubuntu-restricted-extras" now installs instead of Java and it seems to work fine
  • Most software updated, as usual: Firefox 3.6.8, Google Chrome 6, Opera 10.61, etc...
  • KDE and some QT libraries previously included were removed to free up some space (I will consider if they will be re-included in the future)
  • Moonlight removed due a bug in the Ubuntu packages (Silverlight/Moonlight should be avoided anyway)

What is new in version 9.04:

  • Remaster of Ubuntu 9.04
  • Many software was updated (OpenOffice, Furius ISO Mount, Java, Flash, Wine, Firefox, Brasero, Pidgin, GIMP, gufw, Startup Manager, NTFS driver, etc, etc...)
  • An official repository is now available (it is now easier to keep your system updated)
  • cd2usb is now included on the DVD menu (under Windows)
  • apturl support on Opera
  • Fixed Ubuntu bug: windows programs weren't properly associated with wine
  • New software: libdvdcss, wine-gecko, App Runner, Gears for Firefox, Moonlight on Opera and on Firefox

What is new in version 2008.11:

  • Now includes Wubi (to install on Windows)
  • Multi-language support: the Live CD now contains all the languages included in Ubuntu
  • Includes a Live USB creator
  • OpenOffice.org 3
  • It is now made with reconstructor
  • And many other updates and features
