SalentOS is completely free and open source distribution of Linux inspired by Salento, a land molded by the wind and sea, steeped in history and art in the south of the Italian peninsula, and based on the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu.
Availability, supported platforms and boot options
The distribution is available for download in two editions, a Full one and a Light one (with fewer apps), both featuring the minimalistic Openbox window manager. They are distributed as Live CD/DVD ISO images and tagged only for the 32-bit architectures, but fully compatible with the 64-bit hardware platform. The boot menu is identical with the one found on the current Ubuntu operating system, specifically designed to automatically load the live session after approximately seven seconds, allowing users to choose between trying or installing the distro.
Pressing any key on your keyboard during the initial timeout will allow users to choose a different language (default is English), boot another operating system from the first disk drive, check the disc for defects (only if using a CD or DVD media), run a memory (RAM) test, as well as to install the distribution without testing it (not recommended).
Beautified Openbox window manager with state-of-the-art apps
As mentioned, the graphical session in SalentOS is powered by the minimalistic Openbox window manager, which has been beautified to look like a modern desktop environment, with a single panel on the upper part of the screen, from where users can access the main menu, launch apps, and interact with running programs.Default applications include the DeaDBeeF audio player, GNOME MPlayer video player, Mirage image editor, Xfburn CD/DVD burning utility, Chromium web browser, Geary email client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Transmission BitTorrent client, Synaptic Package Manager, and the entire LibreOffice office suite.
