Royale OS

Royale OS is a distribution of Linux based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and designed to be easy to use by Microsoft Windows users who want to migrate to an open source OS.

Available for download as a Live DVD for mainstream architectures

This custom Ubuntu distribution is available for download directly from its official website or via Softoware as a Live DVD ISO image of approximately 1GB in size, which runs on 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms.

Boot options

While the boot prompt has been stripped down to basically a boot prompt, it still allows users to use the standard boot options by entering specific commands that are listed when booting the ISO image from the BIOS of a PC.

Windows XP-like graphical desktop interface powered by LXDE

The main emphasis of this Ubuntu-based operating system is to provide Windows users with a familiar graphical desktop interface. Therefore, it uses a Windows XP theme on top of the lightweight LXDE desktop environment.

Includes popular open source applications

As expected, the distro include popular open source applications, among which we can mention the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Evolution email and calendar client, as well as the entire LibreOffice office suite (includes Writer, Impress, Draw, Calc, Math and Base).

Bottom line

With its Windows XP-like graphical interface, Royale OS features ActiveDirectory integration, a Microsoft Office compatible office suite, as well as powerful web browser, email and groupware apps. It offers a familiar look and feel to all Windows users, but with the power of FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software).

Unfortunately, we were unable to boot and test this open source operating system, as the ISO image appears to be broken. Because of this, you will have to wait for the developer to release a new ISO image!
