Refracta is an open source distribution of Linux based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system. It includes various in-house built tools, such as Refractainstaller, refracta2usb and refractasnapshot, which allow users to further customize their installation and create their very own Live CD or Live USB operating systems.
Available for download as 32-bit/64-bit Live CDs
This Debian-based distribution is available for download as Live CD ISO images for the 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms. The user must write the ISO images to either CD discs or USB flash drives of 1GB or higher capacity in order to boot them from the BIOS of a PC.
Boot options
Default boot options include the ability to start the live environment with default drivers, in text mode, with the “no modeset” or “no probe” options, or by loading the contents of the ISO image to RAM. In addition, it is possible to run a memory diagnostic test, boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive or access a help menu.
Fancy, fast and easy to use graphical desktop environment powered by Xfce
The distro uses Xfce as its default and only desktop environment, which is quite fancy, fast and easy to use, comprised of a single panel (taskbar) located on the upper part of the screen from where users can launch applications or interact with running programs and the system tray area. Keep in mind though, that you must login with either the user/user or root/root username/password combinations.
Includes many lightweight applications
It includes many lightweight applications, among which we can mention the Iceweasel web browser, gFTP file transfer client, Transmission torrent downloader, GNOME MPlayer video player, Audacious audio player, XChat IRC client, AbiWord word processor, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, Midnight Commander two-pane file manager and Synaptic Package Manager.
Bottom line
In conclusion, Refracta provides users with a simple and user-friendly layout that most users will find very comfortable and easy to use. The distro is based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system and it is fully compatible with the default Debian software repository.
