Tanglu GNOME

Tanglu GNOME is an open source Linux distribution built around the complex GNOME (with GNOME Shell) desktop environment and based on the stable Debian GNU/Linux operating system.

It's distributed as GNOME and KDE editions

Being designed for human beings, the Tanglu Linux distribution includes up-to-date and top notch open source applications, tries to provide users with the best desktop experience, and it’s distributed as separate GNOME and KDE editions.

Supports 32-bit and 64-bit architectures

Two Live DVD ISO images are available for the Tanglu GNOME distribution, for both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. There are hybrid ISO images, which means that users will be able to deploy them on USB flash drives.

Supports PAE and non-PAE computers

The 32-bit ISO image provides built-in support for PAE (Physical Address Extension). The boot menu can be used to boot the currently installed operating system, run the live environment in failsafe mode, detect the hardware components of your computer, or test the system memory for errors.

Provides users with a pure GNOME desktop experience

Besides a beautiful wallpaper, the GNOME desktop environment integrated in this edition of Tanglu Linux is untouched. It includes only a few applications and provides users with a pure GNOME desktop experience.

Default applications

Default applications include the LibreOffice office suite (Calc, Impress, Writer, Draw, Math), Mozilla Firefox web browser, Nautilus file manager, Deja Dup backup utility, Empathy instant messenger, Gedit text editor, Evince document viewer, Eye of GNOME image viewer, Shotwell image organizer and editor, Totem video player, and Rhythmbox music player.

Comes with GNOME PackageKit

The GNOME PackageKit package manager is also installed to help novice users to easily install or remove applications from their system. In addition, there’s also a Software Updater tool for keeping your Tanglu OS up-to-date at all times.

Includes many useful utilities

Among other utilities included in Tanglu GNOME, we can mention GNOME Documents, ADSL/PPPoE support, addressbook, GNOME Keyring, Remmina remote desktop client, terminal emulator, Orca screen reader, archive manager, calculator, character map, log viewer, font viewer, system monitor, disk usage analyzer, disk partitioner, and screenshot utility.

What is new in version 3.0:

• Tanglu 3 comes with fresh new packages, a Linux 4.0 kernel, systemd 224, KDE Plasma 5.3 and the latest GNOME release, GNOME 3.16.
• On the installer side, the previous live-installer has been replaced with Calamares, which is now available as additional option to the Debian-Installer installation method.
• The KDE Plasma flavor of Tanglu now comes with Plasma 5, and replaces the Apper package manager with Muon Discover, for installing new software (Apper will come back in future, when it is fully ported). A lot of the KDE packaging is now shared with Kubuntu and the KDE flavor of Debian.
• GNOME is available in version 3.16, although a few components are still on their previous 3.14 release.
• Tanglu Core received the usual amount of updates, serving as a base OS for everyone who does not want a preconfigured desktop installed.

What is new in version 2.0:

• Tanglu 2 comes with a lot of updated packages, a recent systemd, up-to-date KDE4 and the latest release of GNOME.
• We now offer the Debian Installer as new method to install Tanglu, which should be used instead of the live-installer. The live-installer is still available though.
• Tanglu comes with a preview of AppStream integration, making it easier to discover new applications in the Tanglu archives in KDE and GNOME.
• Additionally to the KDE and GNOME flavors, we offer a "Tanglu Core" flavor as well now, which contains the basic operating system, but not more (just enough to get a login shell and some comfort in working with it). If you want to customize Tanglu, this flavor is your choice!
• Thanks to everyone who contributed to this release, to Debian for the great work on the OS we base Tanglu on, and last but not least to our users for the constructive feedback during the Bartholomea release cycle.

What is new in version 2.0 RC1:

• Compared to the previous Beta release, RC1 contains various bug fixes, most notably for bug #68 (no network-manager in GNOME flavour), #84 (fsck failure on first boot after installation with live-installer) and #99 (race between plymouth-quit and GDM). We also updated a few more packages to work better with systemd and fixed a Plymouth crash, as well as the Plymouth bootscreen not being shown in case proprietary drivers are used.
• Also, all packages in Tanglu 2 are now installable and all remaining RC bugs are fixed.

What is new in version 2.0 Beta 2:

• The new release brings tons of improvements, most notably GNOME 3.14 with fixed GDM autologin and a fully usable Debian-Installer (d-i).
• This means Tanglu can now be installed using the Debian-Installer as well, which supports a lot more features compared to our existing live-installer (which is still available to install Tanglu 2).
• We also include the latest bugfix release of KDE 4.11 and updated the KDE applications, which now match the packages currently in Debian unstable/testing.
• SDDM remains the default session manager for KDE
• For the base system, systemd was upgraded, along with a couple of other components. We now ship with a more recent version of nfs-utils, which still requires some further testing from people using NFS.

What is new in version 2.0 Alpha 1:

• We are proud to announce the release of Alpha1 of Tanglu 2 today! The release mainly brings updated software and loads of fixes regarding systemd-services.
• There also has been a lot of work on the Debian installer, to make it work for Tanglu, and initial work exploring a port of Ubiquity (the Ubuntu installer) to Tanglu has started - although this project is only an experiment so far.
• There have also been improvements to KDM (systemd integration), but we expect the final release of Tanglu to ship with SDDM instead of KDM. The whole Tanglu distribution is now built on debile[1] and there have been several other infrastructure improvements alongside that large change.
• We decided to delay the release of Tanglu 2 until October, to do some last package transitions (Perl 5.20, for example) and to ship some more updated components and changes, e.g. it is likely that we will provide all of the KDE SC 4.14 release.
• During that time, the Tanglu 1 release will of course stay supported.

What is new in version 1.0:

• It has been an exciting development period, where lots of new infrastructure was built and set up, new concepts and ideas have been discussed and implemented, new designs were created, texts were translated and blogposts were written.
• Lots of work went into making the Tanglu archive rebuildable.
• During this period, a small but very talented team has formed, which made this release great. We found issues which affected Debian as well, which where reported, fixed or pending report and generally worked well together with Debian.
• Exploring systemd in Tanglu already yielded some hints which will help Debian with its own transition.
• Of course we also diverge from Debian in some points, so you will find differences - Tanglu is not Debian, although we try to work together whenever it is possible.
• Most of the changes made were configuration changes for desktop-usecases, lots of simplifications and removal of some packages from the default installation which are not necessarily required anymore (for example,
• Tanglu does not ship with an MTA: If you need one, install your favourite one from the repository).

What is new in version 1.0 RC2:

• We decided to rebuild the release candidate images, after we found a severe regression in network-manager, which resulted in boot times up to 4 minutes.
• We also found a bug in pppconfig, which affected Tanglu and Debian, so we fixed it in both distributions st the same time, breaking a systemd dependency-cycle on Tanglu and improving the sysvinit-script quality in Debian (while making it ready for systemd at the same time).
• Compared to the previous RC, RC2 also contains a kernel bugfix release, so we now ship with Linux 3.12.9.
• There might be some quirks left on the live-cd, we hope that we can catch them all before the final release happens.
