PCLinuxOS Br Edition KDE is an open source distribution of Linux based on the highly acclaimed PCLinuxOS operating system and built on top of the KDE Plasma Workspaces and Applications project.
The project’s main goal is to provide an easy-to-use and modern Linux-based operating system for the Brazilian community. The main and only language used in this distribution is Brazilian Portuguese.
Availability and boot options
It is available for download as a single and hybrid Live DVD ISO image that can be deployed to a USB flash drive using the UNetbootin application, or written to a blank DVD disc using a CD/DVD burning software.
Default boot options include the ability to run the live environment with default options, without boot splash, in safe graphics mode, in failsafe mode, or to copy the entire Live DVD to RAM (system memory).
It is also possible to use a shell prompt by using the Console option, as well as to install the OS without testing it (not recommended). Before entering the graphical session, users will be asked to choose the default keyboard layout.
Eye candy desktop environment and powerful applications
As mentioned, the distribution uses the KDE Plasma Workspaces and Application as its default desktop environment, which provides users with a single taskbar located at the bottom edge of the screen, allowing users to launch apps or interact with active ones and the system tray area.
Default applications include the Synaptic Package Manager, KWrite text editor, BleachBit system cleaner, Dolphin file manager, XnViewMP image viewer, Konqueror and Mozilla Firefox web browser, and VLC Media Player.
Bottom line
In conclusion, PCLinuxOS Br Edition KDE proves to be a decent and modern operating system that is based on two of the greatest open source technologies, KDE and PCLinuxOS. We recommend users to install it on high-end machines, as well as mid-range systems, as it uses 270MB of RAM at start-up.
