Pak Linux GNOME is the third and last operating system in the Pak Linux trilogy, a low on resources distribution of Linux based on the world’s most popular free OS, Ubuntu, and designed for Urdu-speaking users.
Downloadable as a dual-arch Live DVD
The GNOME edition of Pak Linux can be downloaded through Softoware or from its official website as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image of approximately 1GB in size, designed to be used on either 64-bit or 32-bit instruction set architectures. As expected, the default language for the live environment is Urdu.
Boot options
Once again, the boot menu looks and acts like the one on the main or Xfce editions of Pak Linux, allowing the user to try the operating system without installing anything, perform a system memory (RAM) diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing OS from the first disk drive. The default language on the boot prompt is English.
Familiar, traditional and darkish desktop environment powered by GNOME
As its name suggest, Pak Linux GNOME uses the GNOME desktop environment, which uses a two-panel layout with a dark theme on low-end graphics cards and the modern GNOME Shell interface on 3D-enabled video cards. As usual, you must login into the live environment with the ‘paklinux’ username and without no password.
Default applications
Default applications include the Audacious audio player, PiTiVi video editor, Empathy IM client, Transmission torrent downloader, Shutter screenshot utility, Mozilla Firefox web browser, gFTP file transfer client, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor and Nautilus file manager.
Bottom line
Summing up, Pak Linux GNOME is a decent operating system proved to be a little slower than the Xfce and main flavors of this Ubuntu-based distribution of Linux. If you want a faster and lighter OS for your low-end machine, we strongly suggest to try the other two Pak Linux editions.
