Linux Educational

Linux Educational is an open source and freely distributed Linux operating system of the Federal Government in Brazil, designed from the ground up to offer the best computing environment in schools and similar educational institutions. It is based on the Ubuntu Linux distribution and uses the GNOME desktop environment.

Distributed as dual-language Live DVDs

The operating system is available for download from Softoware as Live DVD ISO images that support the Brazilian Portuguese and English languages, as well as the 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i386) instruction set architectures.

Boot options

A custom boot prompt is provided on the Live DVDs, allowing the user to try the operating system without installing anything, permanently install the distribution, run a system memory diagnostic test, boot an existing OS from the first disk, as well as to check the integrity of the disc (only if booting from a DVD media).

Powerful GNOME desktop environment suitable for educational institutions

As mentioned, the default and only desktop environment is GNOME, a highly customized version of it that uses beautiful artwork, a top panel and a dock (application launcher) on the left side of the screen.

Include a wide range of educational apps

As expected, the operating system includes a wide range of educational applications and games, among which we can mention GCompris, KAlgebra, Kanagram, KGeography, Kig, Marble, Tux Math, Ktouch, KHangMan, Blinken, KBruch, KmPlot, KTurtle, and KWordQuiz.

Bottom line

Using only free and open source software, Linux Educational leverages the use of educational technologies, ensuring improvement of education, technology insertion, and sociability. It is based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux, and uses the powerful GNOME desktop environment.

Linux Educational was developed by the Centre for Scientific Computing and Free Software (C3SL) of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), with technical support from the Center for Educational Technologies.

• Changed video player and audio standard for VLC
• Firefox opens video files and audio in VLC rather than directly in the browser
• Fixed issue that prevented users from viewing student at educational contents
• Fixed bug that showed the LibreOffice icon with text in English on the favorites menu in the overview
• Added translation into Portuguese for various games and help manuals, included the LibreOffice manual
• Added the LibreOffice spellchecker
• Newly installed: unrar (unpacker), Rhythmbox (audio player), gCompris (educational game)
• Fixed display issue with the ubiquity of the system enabled high contrast
• If changed, the position of Edubar returns to original position at the next login
• Size and proportions of edubar are automatically adjusted more precisely
• Fixed problem in search of educational content that prevented users from viewing certain content
