ExTiX is an open source and free distribution of GNU/Linux based on the Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) and Debian 8 (Jessie) operating systems, built around the minimal and very lightweight LXQt desktop environment, which is written in the Qt programming language. The distribution is powered by the latest Linux 4.1 kernel and includes a wide range of useful open source applications. An extra KDE edition is also available for download.

Only supports the 64-bit architecture

The ExTiX project is designed to be used by end-users who need a modern and handy desktop system for their daily tasks. Unfortunately for some of you, the operating system supports only the 64-bit CPU architecture, mainly because it’s designed to be used on high-end computers. Therefore, if this is an issue for you, we suggest to search our website for another Linux operating system that supports 32-bit hardware platforms (for low-end computers).

The Live mediums offer a few useful options

The Live mediums offer a few useful options, such as the ability to use the operating system in persistence mode, which means that you can save some system settings and other files on the USB disk drive from where you boot the distro, and continue your work next time you use the live environment. In addition, the Copy to RAM option will allow users to copy the entire live environment to the machine’s physical memory (RAM) and remove the bootable medium from the USB port or CD-ROM.

It can be installed directly from the boot menu

Users can install ExTiX on their computers using the dedicated installer application found under the System Tools category of the Start Menu. The default language is English, and a specially crafted Ubuntu kernel, based on the upstream Linux kernel 4.1, is used. ExTiX was also one of the first projects to adopt the Linux 4.1 kernel.

Clean and simple desktop environment powered by LXQt

As mentioned, the distribution is built around the LXQt desktop environment, which provides users with a clean and simple interface to do their daily computing tasks. It consist of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen, allowing users to access the Start Menu, launch applications, cycle between multiple workspaces, interact with running apps and essential system functions that reside in the system tray area. Keep in mind to use the 'extix' username (without a password) at the login prompt.

Beautiful and attractive KDE4 desktop environment

On the other hand, the KDE edition of ExTiX replaced the Ubuntu Unity user interface with beautiful and attractive KDE 4.14.4 desktop environment. It include KDE Frameworks 5.7.0, Linux kernel 3.19.0, the entire LibreOffice office suite, the Google Chrome web browser for watching Netflix movies, Samba for accessing Windows shares, and other goodies.

Includes a handful of open-source applications

ExTiX includes a handful of open-source applications on both editions, including the PCManFM as the default file manager, Google Chrome as the default web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird as the default email and news client, the LibreOffice office suite for creating word and excel documents, Brasero for burning CD/DVDs, JuffEd and Leadpad text editors, LXImage image viewer, GIMP for editing image files, SMplayer for watching movies, BlueGriffon HTML editor, QTerminal, XTerm and UXTerm as terminal emulators, and Synaptic Package Manager, which is used for installing additional apps.

  • The ExTiX ISO is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run ExTiX from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! I've found two scripts which make the installation to USB very simple. The scripts are quite ingenious. Unfortunately, it is not me who have created them. I found the scripts on Kanotix website. There was no direct indication of how good the scripts were, but my tests show that they work flawlessly on USB installations of all normal Ubuntu systems. Read my INSTRUCTION how to use the scripts: http://www.extix.se/extix-usb-persistent/
  • Another big improvement is that ExTiX 14 can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (Copy to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You'll need at least 2 GB RAM to run ExTiX that way.

All programs have been updated to the latest available stable version as of May 17, 2012 >> see a complete list.
  • Passwords
  • The password for live is live. You can only run ExTiX 10 live (from dvd or usb) as the ordinary user live. The password for root is root.
  • Compatibility:
  • Differences: Ubuntu 12.04 and ExTiX 10 is different only in principle to the terms of program content. A general truth: If an original system can run on a particular computer an "Exton remaster" of the same original system can run on the same computer. I never change a Linux system for the worse in terms of auto configuration and hardware detection, etc. It happens that I replace the original kernel, but always to a "better" one with even more native support for various hardware etc.
  • Differences:
  • One big difference in ExTiX 10 though:There is a password for root. After installation to harddisk ExTiX 10 will behave exactly as any other Ubuntu system. You can even remove root's password (if you want). Command (as root): password root -l. Or change it with passwd root.
  • Nvidia's proprietary driver:
  • I have installed driver 295.53 so that you can enjoy the full Gnome Desktop live (if you have a new Nvidia card in you computer).
  • Installation to hard disk:
  • Note that you in advance (just in case) should create a partition of at least 8 GB for ExTiX 10 and a SWAP space double the size of your computer's RAM. Ie if you have RAM of 1024 MB or less. If you have RAM of 2 GB or more it's enough with a SWAP space of 2 GB. The installation program in ExTiX 10/Ubuntu is otherwise "intuitive". Choose manual partitioning and select the partition you created in advance for installation. If you receive the error message The username you entered is invalid: See this solution. SAFE INSTALLATON: Do not change language/locale from default English during installation.
  • USB installation:
  • You should use UNetbootin in Windows or Linux. See a picture how it looks before the installation starts in Windows 7. There's other ways to do it, but using UNetbootin is the best/safest way. However, if you want to install ExTiX 10 to harddisk you will have to run the system from a dvd during installation. If you use Startup Disk Creator in Linux to transfer ExTiX 10 to USB it is possible to install ExTiX to harddisk later on from the USB stick.
  • Change of locale/language:
  • After a harddisk installation you can (of course) change the default language (English) settings. Login as root and go to System Settings >> Locale Support and install necessary language packages. Apply your settings System-Wide. Then edit /root/.bashrc and change at the bottom of that file en_US.UTF-8 to sv_SE.UTF-8 or your preferred language. Restart your computer and everything should be in your choosen language.

What is new in version 9:

  • ExTiX 9 x64 is a remaster of Ubuntu 11.10 released on 13 October 2011. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Unity with Gnome 3.2. After removing Unity I have installed Gnome Shell and Razor-qt so that everyone on the spot (during live operation) can compare the different Desktop Environments. I have also replaced the original kernel 3.0.0-14-generic with "my" kernel 3.1.6-extix. Kernel 3.1.6 is the latest available stable kernel, which can be downloaded from kernel.org. The system language is English.
  • Why has the kernel been replaced?
  • Latest Ubuntu (11:10) uses kernel 3.0.0-14-generic. There has been added a lot of different kinds of hardware support etc. in the latest stable kernel 3.1.6. So if you have acquired new hardware, which is not supported in Ubuntu 11.10 and/or Linux systems based on Ubuntu 11.10 it might be worth testing ExTiX 9. There is, among other things, support for brand new USB devices, like printers and cameras, etc. Odd support: Wii (which is not supported in Ubuntu's latest kernel 3.0.0-14-generic). If you just want to switch to "my" newer kernel (in your already installed Ubuntu system) you shall do it like this.
  • A. Get the kernel
  • B. Get the kernel-headers
  • Run these commands as root:
  • 1) dpkg -i linux-image-3.1.6-extix_3.1.6-extix-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
  • 2) dpkg -i linux-headers-3.1.6-extix_3.1.6-extix-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
  • 3) cd /lib/modules
  • 4) update-initramfs -ck 3.1.6-extix
  • 5) update-grub
  • Program content etc
  • Among many other programs LibreOffice, Thunderbird, Firefox, Brasero, VLC, Gimp and win32 codecs. In addition, Java and all necessary additions in order to install programs from source. All programs have been updated to the latest available stable version as of 28 December 2011.
  • Compatibility
  • Differences: Ubuntu 11.10 and ExTiX 9 is different only in principle to the terms of program content. A general truth: If an original system can run on a particular computer a "Exton remaster" of the same original system can run on the same computer. I never change a Linux system for the worse in terms of auto configuration and hardware detection, etc. It happens that I replace the original kernel (which I have done in ExTiX 9), but always to a "better" one with even more native support for various hardware etc. One problem: If you choose to install ExTiX 9 to hard disk or USB disk (not using UNetbootin), you should first disconnect your USB webcam. Towards the end of the installation you are asked to take a "login picture" with the webcam. Then Ubiquity hangs. Nevertheless the actual installation is complete, except for the Grub2 installation, so unless you intend to install Grub2 in MBR (/dev/sda) there is no problem. Just do your changes in Grub2 or Grub Legacy and then restart the computer. Without a webcam plugged in, however, the installation program (Ubiquity) works perfectly. The "webcam problem" is the same in the original system Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. It's a bug even in upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 64bit.

What is new in version 8.0:

  • These new versions of ExTiX Linux Live CD/DVD includes the 2.6.32-5 kernel by default, LXDE/KDE, AbiWord/OpenOffice, all development tools, GIMP, Skype (Free Internet Telephony), all win32-codecs, Vlc, GParted, Iceweasel (Firefox), Icedove (Thunderbird) and Synaptic Package Manager.

What is new in version 7.0:

  • This new version of ExTiX Linux Live DVD includes the 2.6.30 -extix kernel by default, Gnome 2.26.1, OpenOffice.org 3.0.1-2, all development tools, GIMP 2.6.6, Skype 2.0.0.72 (Free Internet Telephony), Apache (Web Server), all win32-codecs, Vlc 1.0.0, GParted 1.3.6, aMule 2.2.2 (file sharing), Firefox 3.0.11, Wine 1.1.20, GNU Emacs 22.3.1 and the Gnome Web Browser Epiphany 2.26.1. UnionFS stacks your ExTiX ramdisk on top of the read-only filesystem on the DVD, the effect being that you can upkg-install, and otherwise modify all of the files on the running system as though they were all writeable. The standard Gnome and System language is English. You can, however, easily change language and keyboard layout to Swedish during upstart of the system from the DVD.
