Bauer-Puntu Linux

Bauer-Puntu Linux is an open source and free operating system based on the Xfce edition of the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Xubuntu, and designed from the ground up to be used for protecting your anonymity online.

Available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD

The distribution is available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image that need to be written on a DVD disc or a USB flash drive of 2GB or higher capacity in order to be booted from the BIOS of a computer.

Boot options

Default boot options include the ability to try the operating system without installing anything on your computer, start the installer directly, boot an existing OS from the first disk drive, as well as to run a memory test.

Hackerish graphical desktop environment powered by Xfce

As mentioned, the operating system is based on Xubuntu, which means that it features the Xfce desktop environment. It has a hackerish design and comprises of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen.

The good news is that the Bauer-Puntu Linux distribution includes a plethora of security, anonymity and system administration related apps, among which we can mention the CHNTPW Windows password cracker, ClamTK anti-virus, Wireshark network scanner, as well as LOIC Windows-based DoS tool.

In addition, the Aircrack NG Wireless cracking tool, Tor Browser Bundle secure & anonymous web browser, Fern Wifi Cracker Wireless cracker, Truecrack Truecrypt volume brute force tool, Nmap network scanner, Keepass encrypted password vault, and WPScan Wordpress vulnerability scanner are also included.

Bottom line

With Bauer-Puntu Linux, you can change system administrator passwords in Windows, do offline maintenance on computers that are protected with the deprecated Truecrypt full disk encryption, or clean an infected Windows XP system using the ClamTK anti-virus.

What is new in this release:

• I have some good news and bad news for Bauer-Puntu users out there. The good news is that I've finally finished Bauer-Puntu 13.10. The bad news is that there is a bug in Relinux that breaks the Ubiquity installer and therefore you cannot install this version of Bauer-Puntu to your hard drive. That's why I'm calling this version Bauer-Puntu 13.10LO (Live Only).
• That is good news if you only use Bauer-Puntu on a Live DVD or a Live USB stick for doing stuff like changing administrator passwords in Windows, doing offline maintenance on machines protected with Truecrypt full disk encryption, or doing an offline virus scan on an infected Windows system with ClamTK.
• If you like to use Bauer-Puntu as your primary operating system, you will just have to use Bauer-Puntu 13.04 for now, and run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade it from 13.04 to 13.10. Of course, you may loose some of my customizations, but it will at least be running Xubuntu 13.10.
• So what's new in 13.10LO? Not too much. I did create a new Plymouth splash screen though with support for LUKS encryption. If you only want that, I've made it available on Gnome-Look.org. I also replaced Transmission Bittorrent client with Deluge, and I kept Firefox as the default browser and stopped putting Chromium on because of the NSA's relationship with Google. I also added a couple of programs to help with privacy better in Firefox, and set Firefox to never remember history by default.
• Of course the good stuff to protect you from the NSA is still installed. Tor Browser Bundle, Truecrypt, Enigmail for Thunderbird, and OTR for Pidgin are still there.

What is new in version 13.04:

• Well I finally got it done. I finished up Bauer-Puntu 13.04. This time I decided to cut out a lot of the stuff I don't really use. stuff like Metasploit, SET, and some other hacking tools. If you want to do some serious pentesting, Bauer-Puntu really isn't for you. If you want to do that, I suggest downloading BackTrack.
• Bauer-Puntu is still cool though. I mean, I am a Systems Engineer by trade, and therefore I decided to keep the stuff I do use quite a bit. Stuff like chntpw to reset local administrator passwords in Windows, as well as a number of encryption tools to keep the NSA and the FBI from snooping on you, or at the very least, keep them guessing a little bit. I also kept stuff like GParted for offline disk re-sizing, and some other stuff as well.
• Also, I brought back Cairo-Dock. I tried installing Cinnamon again this time, but it kept crashing for some reason so I scrapped it. I also built it using Xubuntu, so the window manager is XFCE, and should be rather light.
