Baltix

Baltix is an open-source operating system derived from the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu, which in turn is based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux OS. While the main language of the live system is English, the OS also supports the Lithuanian, Latvian, Russian, Estonian and Norwegian languages.

It is distributed as a dual-arch Live DVD

The OS is distributed as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image that will support both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms. It’s a hybrid ISO image that can be written to either a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive of 1GB or higher capacity in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

You can try it before installing it

Being distributed as a Live DVD, you can try the operating system before installing it. This the default behavior of the ISO image, which also includes the ability to start the installation directly, boot an existing OS from the first disk drive or perform a system memory diagnostic test.

The default desktop environment is Unity, but it also includes GNOME

This Ubuntu-based distribution uses Unity as its default and only desktop environment, which prompts users with an informational panel about the keyboard shortcuts implemented in the OS.

On the desktop, there’s a shortcut that will help you to quickly switch between the Unity and the GNOME graphical interfaces.

It includes a standard set of open-source applications

For an Ubuntu derived operating system, Baltix includes a standard set of open-source applications, among which we can mention the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Deja Dup backup system, Empathy instant messenger, Mozilla Firefox web browser and the entire LibreOffice office suite.

In addition, it includes the HomeBank personal finance manager, Boot-Repair utility for repairing broken boot loaders, Meld diff and merge tool, Midnight Commander two-pane file manager, Ubuntu Tweak for tweaking the Unity desktop environment, a Weather indicator, as well as VLC Media Player.
