Transmission Remote CLI is a free, cross-platform and open source command-line software written designed to act as remote CLI (Command-line Interface) front-end for the Transmission daemon.

It is a simple and easy-to-use software that lets users to remotely control Transmission via its RPC protocol. It features support for SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol for secure connections, as well as support for custom configuration file.

Those of you who want a GUI (Graphical User Interface) client for controlling the Transmission daemon, can used the Transmission Remote GUI application that is available on the Softoware website.

Getting started with Transmission Remote CLI

First of all, we should mention that the program is officially supported on the Arch Linux, openSUSE, Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian GNU/Linux operating systems, which means that you can install it from the main software repositories of these distros.

If the package is not available on the software repos of your distribution, you can use it on your favorite GNU/Linux machine via the source tarball (tar.gz file) distributed on Softoware. Download the archive, save it on a location of your choice, unpack its contents, open a terminal emulator and navigate to the location of the extracted archive files using the ‘cd’ command.

The application requires no installation. The executable script can be found on the folder where you’ve extracted the source tarball. Detailed usage information can be found on the project’s homepage (see link below).

Command-line options

The program comes with various command-line options, among which we can mention the ability to point it to the Transmission server using a pattern, connect to Transmission using SSL (Secure Socket Layer), specify the path to the configuration file, create a configuration file with default values, get authentication information from the local .netrc file, as well as to enable debugging.
