TurnKey phpBB Live CD is an open source software appliance designed from the ground up for people who are looking for a modern and totally free solution to deploy dedicated phpBB servers with minimum effort.
phpBB is an open source used web forum software used by millions worldwide. It features high security, a professional-quality modular design, a powerful administration panel, and a multiple-language interface.
The appliance includes all of the upstream phpBB configurations, which are tweaked to allow users to upload avatars, and provides admins with an example forum that includes a welcome post with the default login credentials.
In addition, it comes with out-of-the-box support for secure connections through the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) specification, the phpMyAdmin software for easy management of MySQL databases, a Postfix mail server for sending emails to users, and Webmin modules for configuring PHP, Apache and MySQL.
Both Live CDs and virtual images are available for download for this TurnKey appliance. While the Live CDs are distributed as ISO images that can be deployed to USB flash drives or CD discs, the virtual images are distributed as binary archives in the OVF, OpenStack, Xen, OpenNode and OpenVZ formats.
It is possible to install the appliance on a local disk drive with the ISO images. The entire installation procedure takes a few minutes and requires users to only partition the storage device and choose where to install the boot loader.
The default username for the Webmin, MySQL, phpMyAdmin and SSH components is root, and the default phpBB username is admin. After installation, during the first boot configuration process, users will be able to enter a password for the root account and the MySQL 'root' account.
In order to have a working phpBB installation, it is a must to set up a password and a valid email address for the phpBB 'admin' account. Don't forget to write down the IP addresses and ports of the active services for this appliance, which are displayed at the end of the first boot setup wizard.
