TurnKey Node.js Live CD is an open source Debian-based operating system that has been designed from the ground up to be used as an appliance for deploying dedicated servers with the award winning Node.js software.
Node.js is an open source JS framework built on Chrome's JavaScript runtime and specially designed for easily building scalable and fast network applications. The appliance comes with all the upstream Node.js configurations, which are installed by default in /opt/tklweb-cp.
Key features include the NPM package manager with npm-completion support, the nginx web server for proxyfing the nodejs daemon, the TurnKey Web Control panel, as well as support for running the Node app in background, as a daemon, thanks to a custom Node.js initscript.
In addition, it includes a Postfix MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) that is bound to localhost and designed for sending email messages to users, such as password recovery, and Webmin module for configuring the Postfix mail server.
The appliance is distributed as Live CD ISO images, which can be written to USB flash drives or CD discs, as well as virtual machines in the OpenVZ, OVF, Xen, OpenStack and OpenNode formats. Supported architectures include 32-bit and 64-bit.
It can be easily installed to a local disk drive using the Live CDs, as well as to just try it without installing anything on your computer, thanks to the demo mode. Keep in mind that the default username for the Webmin and SSH components is root.
During the first boot configuration process, which takes place after the installation, users will be able to enter a new password for the root (system administrator) account, and, optionally, enable the TurnKey Backup and Migration or TurnKey Domain Management and Dynamic DNS services.
At the end of the first boot setup wizard, you can view the active methods for accessing the TurnKey Node.js appliance, so make sure you write down those IP addresses and ports.
