As its name suggests, Quantal Quetzal OS is an open source distribution of Linux based on the Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) operating system, but it includes twice as much applications. It still uses the Unity desktop environment and supports the Spanish language.
Available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD
This custom Ubuntu 12.10 distribution can be downloaded via Softoware or directly from the project’s homepage (see link above) as a single, dual-arch Live DVD ISO image. It has approximately 2GB in size and supports both 32-bit and 64-bit instruction set architectures.
Boot options
The ISO image comes with a standard boot menu, allowing the user to start the live environment with default drivers or in safe graphics mode, start the installer directly, run a system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive.
Unity desktop environment for Spanish-speaking users
The default and only desktop environment of this Ubuntu-based distribution is Unity, which has not been changed or tweaked in any way. By default, it provides support only for Spanish-speaking users, but after installation you can add support for any other language supported by Ubuntu.
Includes some of the best free software
It includes some of the best free software that are not available on the original Ubuntu 12.10 version, such as GIMP, Spotify, Banshee, Skype, Dropbox, ClipGrab, Ubuntu Tweak, GParted, Filezilla, Chromium, Pitivi, Inkscape, VirtualBox, PlayOnLinux, VLC Media Player, Shutter, and many others.
Bottom line
In conclusion, Quantal Quetzal OS is a good distribution of Linux mainly designed for the Ubuntu Spanish community. It adds an extra layer of open source applications, as well as the latest updates, on top of the upstream Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) operating system. New releases will be based on recent versions of Ubuntu!
