Pinguy OS is an open source Linux distribution that provides users with an out-of-the-box computing experience. It is based on Canonical's Ubuntu Linux operating system and powered by the GNOME desktop environment.

The distribution’s main goal is to be easy-to-use by novice Linux users, helping them to accommodate to the open source computing environment and achieve their daily tasks without much hassle.

Distributed as two Live DVDs

It is distributed as a two Live DVD ISO images, which support both the 64-bit instruction set architecture and the 32-bit hardware platform. The ISO images can be deployed on either USB flash drives or on blank DVD discs.

Offers standard boot options

The boot medium provides users with a traditional boot menu found on other Linux-based operating system and engineered to allow users to run a memory test, boot the currently installed OS, start the live environment in safe graphics mode, and install the system directly, without testing it (not recommended).

GNOME has been crafted to perfection

As mentioned, the operating system uses the GNOME desktop environment. It has been crafted to perfection, bringing various user-friendly enhancements, out-of-the-box support for multimedia files, as well as enhanced panels, menus and dockbars.

Default applications

Default applications include the LibreOffice suite, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email client, Clementine audio player, VLC Media Player, Plex Media Server, Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Pinta image editor, Deluge BitTorrent client, Empathy instant messenger, Steam for Linux client, and many others.

In addition, the Nautilus file manager has been replaced for the Elementary-Nautilus software, which is bundled with a plethora of useful plugins designed to allow users to achieve various tasks easily, for example to get artwork for video and music file from the web.

Bottom line

All in all, Pinguy OS is a modern and reliable Linux-based operating system that not only uses a stable Ubuntu base, but also includes a handpicked collection of open source desktop applications for common tasks.

What is new in this release:

  • I have updated the Pinguy Builder so it now has full support for UEFI on 32-bit distros. This includes off-line install of the UEFI Grub. Version 4.* has beta support for 16.04. This is still very much a work in progress.
  • Because of the update and people having issues with off-line install with Pinguy OS, I have updated and repackaged all the ISOs with the new Pinguy Builder. So if you had issues installing in the past, this is now all fixed.
