Manjaro Linux KDE is an open source Linux operating system that uses all the powerful features found on other Manjaro editions, but on top of a highly customized KDE desktop environment. It is based on the Arch Linux distribution, which means that it is a very stable, reliable and virus-free operating system.

Follows a rolling-release model

It follows a rolling-release model keeping your installation up-to-date forever (or at least until a complete reinstall is required because of unforeseen circumstances). It is available for download as an ISO image that you will need to burn on a blank DVD disc or use Unetbootin to deploy it on a USB flash drive.

Live DVD boot menu options

It uses exactly the same boot menu found on all official Manjaro releases, allowing users to install the entire operating system on their computer, use the distribution directly from the live media, or boot the operating system that is already installed on the respective computer.

Uses the KDE Plasma desktop environment

Because it uses the KDE Plasma desktop environment, this edition is much bigger in size than any other Manjaro flavor. Besides all the amazing applications that are part of a default KDE installations, this edition includes the entire LibreOffice office suite, the GIMP image editor, and the VLC Media Player applications.

You can install the OS with or without proprietary drivers

An interesting feature of the Manjaro Live CD is the ability to use or install the operating system with or without proprietary drivers. This means that if you have an AMD Radeon or Nvidia graphics card, choosing the second option (Start or install Manjaro (non-free drivers)) is the best method to enjoy a complete Manjaro experience. On the other hand, if you have an Intel video card, we suggest to use the first option when installing or using the live environment.

Bottom line

We highly recommend the Manjaro Linux KDE operating system if you own a high-end computer and you want to transform it into a modern, beautiful, clean and powerful workstation for office, multimedia and gaming tasks.

What is new in this release:

  • This is one of the biggest updates we did so far. Mostly due the C++ 11 ABI change within gcc. It is recommended to rebuild your AUR packages for this ABI. With this we finally dropping Plasma 4 for good. All users of this desktop should either switch over to Plasma 5 or any other maintained desktop, like LXQt.
  • So what changed? We have now Plasma 5.5 with all its goodies, updated Mesa, LibreOffice 4 and 5 series. Firefox 43 is using now GTK3. You might need to check your themes if you have unwanted graphical issues due this change. However we fixed Menda, so you should be fine with that theme.
  • Most of our kernels got updated to the latest point release. Kernel 4.2 gained extended stable support from Canonical. Bumblebee uses now the group ‘bumblebee' for the X-Server. Your user should been added to this group automatically. Wine got its 4th release candidate and is now pretty stable. We renewed some features of Manjaro-Settings-Manager and changed our profile structure of our manjaro-tools. Maintainers of Manjaro Install Medias should adopt to this new style.

What is new in version 15.12 / 16.06 Pre3:

What is new in version 0.8.13 / 15.09 RC4:

  • Our KDE edition continues to deliver this powerful, mature and feature-rich desktop environment with a unique look-and-feel, and with the perks of Manjaro's latest tools. We ship now Plasma 5.4 desktop in combination with the latest KDE-Apps 15.08. It was a huge step to get all playing together smoothly to give the user experience the same feeling as we did with our KDE4 editions in the past.
  • The Linux kernel used on the 15.09 installation media is the 4.1 (LTS) series. This series of kernel has been selected for it's blend of stability, long-term viability and modern features & hardware support.
  • Our graphical installer Thus (default graphical installer) aswell as the CLI installer have been thoroughly tested to meet a huge variety of system and encryption environments. Additionally we added Calamares as an alternative graphical installer to try out.
  • Within Plasma 5 we updated our theme Maia, created by David Linares (mcder3). It includes a slick icon theme and nicely put out green-based look and feel. Take a look and get wowed!
  • Relative to the last installation media release, our tools have been improved and polished.
  • The Manjaro Settings Manager now provides an easy-to-use graphical interface for installing and removing the many series of kernels we offer. Manjaro's selection of readily available kernels remains the most extensive of all Linux distribution we know of. At the time of this 15.09 release, nine series of kernel are available directly from our binary repositories, ranging from the mature & rock-solid 3.10 series to the latest 4.2 release. Such a wide array of available kernel options results in extensive hardware support, getting the most out of your system for you, be it old or new.
  • Manjaro Settings Manager now also includes friendly graphical interfaces for adjusting system date/time settings and for customising notifications for available kernel & language pack updates. Additonally we created a kcm module to integrate Manjaro Settings Manager seamlessly into System-Settings of Plasma 5.
  • Both our graphical package management tools have received important updates.
  • Our Qt package management tool, Octopi, is now at version 0.7.1 bringing many improvements and bug-fixes, and shipped using Qt5 for the main interface. Alternate to the generic updates notifier, a notifier package with KDE Frameworks 5 support is also available.
  • Steam is now provided with two launcher choices, one for using the native system libraries and one for using the Steam compatibility libraries, in an effort to offer the best compatibility and performance for different Steam games.
  • Although the main installation medias continue to utilise systemd, Manjaro now optionally offers extensive support for the OpenRC init system, giving you the power of choice for your init system, something rarely readily offered in Linux distributions nowadays.
