As its name suggests, GNUstep Live CD is a Live Linux distribution that contains a full-featured graphical desktop environment powered by GNUstep. It contains a vast amount of software packages designed for GNUstep, a free software implementation of Cocoa, and it’s based on Morphix, a distribution of Linux derived from Knoppix, which in turn is based off of Debian GNU/Linux.

It’s designed for the i686 architecture

This unique GNUstep operating system is distributed as a Live CD ISO image designed for the i686 (32-bit) architecture. While the ISO image fits perfectly on a CD disc, as it has approximately 650MB in size, it can be written to a USB thumb drive of 1GB or higher capacity in order to create a bootable medium.

Boot options à la Debian GNU/Linux

Being based on Morphix/Knoppix/Debian, the distribution comes with a standard Live CD boot menu that allows the user to start the live system with normal configuration or in failsafe mode, as well as to access a help screen with detailed information about available boot options.

The currently used window manager is Window Maker

As expected, the distribution uses the Window Maker window manager as its default and only graphical desktop environment. Window Maker doesn’t uses taskbars and panels, instead it provides users with desktop widgets, also known as docklets.

Comes pre-loaded with several interesting apps

The GNUstep distribution comes pre-loaded with several interesting app, including Gorm for RAD (Apple Software Design Guidelines). MPlayer (GNUstep port), Preview, GWorkspace, GNUmail, ProjectCenter and GNU TeXmacs.

The operating system can be installed to a disk drive

In addition, the Emacs 23 advanced text editor, DOSBox DOS emulator, Blender 3D modeller, Midnight Commander two-pane file manager, MyPaint graphic editor, GIMP image editor, XSane image scanner and Google Chrome web browser are also included. The operating system can be installed to a disk drive.
